Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAY R. MONROE, a citizen of the United States, resident of New York, in the county of New York and State lof New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Carriage-Locks for Calculating-Machines; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention with the lock released. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2*-2, Fig. 3, with the lock effected. Fig. 3 is a front view of the invention, the carriage being omitted and parts being broken away. Fig. 4 is a detail side view of lthe cam.
The invention has relation to calculating machines of the type shown in Letters Patent No. 1,080,245, dated December 2, 1913, and particularly to means for automatically holding down the hinged carriage whereupon are mounted the registering wheels, at the start of each rotation of the operating device or crank handle, and for releasing said carriage at the finish ofy each rotation thereof, whereby the carriage is prevented from being shifted or moved endwise during the turning'ofy said crank handle, or while the registration is being effected, the object being to provide a holding means for the purpose stated that may be released at will at any time during the turning of the crank handle, to enable the carriage to be lifted and any necessary adjustments made.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the endwise -shiftable carriage, hinged in rear at 59, said carriage having mounted thereupon the numeral or registering wheels 13, engaged by the intermediate gears 12, said intermediate gears being operated by the primary wheels, an operating device or crank handle 3 turning gears 76, 75, 74, etc., all as described in the patent referred to.
Means are provided to automatically hold the carriage down at the start of each rotation of the operating device or crank handle and to release the carriage at the finish of each rotation thereof, the holding means being releasable at will during the turning of said handle, and comprising preferably the following devices: A series of forwardlyprojecting pins 66 is provided upon the carriage, said pins being engaged by a lever a, having an upward -eXtending hook arm a', loosely mounted at ZJ, upon the shaft 4 of the primary wheels, and a lower arm c, at substantially right angles to the hook arm, the extremity of said lower arm having engagement with a rotary cam cl, upon the shaft 7 3 of the carrying mechanism. The upper hoo-k end of the arm a, is, while the shaft 7 3 or crank 3 is turning, located over one of the pins 66 of the carriage, to prevent raising of the carriage upon its pivot, the lower arm c, of said lever having engagement with the circumferential surface g, of the cam and being acted upon by a radial extension e, of the cam at the completion of the turning or rotation of said shaft o-r handle, to move said upper hook end from over said pin to release the carriage, the movement of said lever taking place against the tension of spring f, connected thereto, said spring acting to return the, lever to locking position at the start of the neXt operation of the crank handle, the radial extension of the cam passing from engagement with the lever arm.
At any time during the turning of the crank handle the hooked lever may be pressed back by hand, against the tension of the spring, to release the engagement thereof with the carriage for the purpose stated.
The holding means described is usually provided in duplicate, one lock at each end of the carriage.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a calculating machine having a hinged carriage whereupon are mounted registering wheels, setting up mechanism including primary wheels operating said registering wheels, carrying mechanism, and an operating device for turning said primary wheels and said carrying mechanism, o-f means including a yieldable spring pressed member for holding the carriage down at the start of each rotation of said device and for releasing the carriage at the finish of each rotation to enable the carriage to be lifted during such rotation.
2. The combination with a calculating machine having a hinged carriage whereupon are mounted registering Wheels, setting up mechanism including primary Wheels operating said registering Wheels7 carrying mechanism, and an operating device for turning said primary Wheels and said carrying mechanism, of means including a cam-operated yieldable spring-pressed member for holding the carriage down at the start of each rotation of said device and for releasing the carriage at the finish of each rotation, to enable the carriage to he lifted during such rotation.
8. The combination With a calculating Inachine having a hinged carriage whereupon are mounted registering Wheels, setting up mechanism including primary Wheels, carrying mechanism, an operating device for turning said primary Wheels and said carrying mechanism, and a series of Wheels operated by said primary Wheels and operating said registering Wheels, of means for yieldably holding the carriage down at the start of each rotation of said device and for releasinp' the carriage at the finish of each rotation, including a lever, a spring operating the lever to engage and lock the carriage, and means operating said lever for release.
4. The combination with a calculating machine having` a hinged carriage provided with registering Wheels, setting up mechanism including primary Wheels operating said registering Wheels, an operating device for turning said primary Wheels and said carrying mechanism, of means for yieldably holding the Carriage down at the start of each rotation of said device and for releasing the carriage at the finish of each rotation, including a hooked lever, a spring operating the lever to engage and hold the carriage, and a rotary cam operating said lever for release.
5. The combination with a calculating machine having a hinged carriage provided with registering Wheels, setting-up mechanism including primary Wheels, carrying mechanism, an operating means including a crank handle for turning said primary Wheels and said carrying mechanism, and a series of Wheels operated by said primary Wheels and operatino said registering Wheels, of means for yielda ly holding the carriage down at the start of each rotation of said handle and for releasing the carriage at the finish of each rotation, including a bell-crank hooked lever, a spring operating the lever to engage and hold the carriage, and a rotary cam operating said leverl for release.
