EDGAR E. PHINNEY, OF WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO MONROE CALCU- LATING MACHINE COMPANY, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
REVERSE-OPERATION CHECK FOR REGISTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J l 12 1921 Application filed February 28, 1920. Serial No. 362,019.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR E. PHTNNEY, a. citizen of the United States of America, and resident of \Vest Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Reverse-Operation Checks for Registers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon. which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of a machine embodying the invention, with the casing partly broken away.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectlon of the same.
Fig.3 is a detail front view of one end of shaft 73, with the check mechanism related thereto.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the same, with the frame member removed.
The invention has relation to meansfor preventing reverse rotation of a rotary member, after its rotation is initiated, and effective throughout a predetermined portion of its rotary movement, in either direction. The invention is designed mainl for use in connection with the operating e ement of a calculating machine of the general type shown in the reissue patent to Baldwin, 0. 13,841. and is an improvement upon the reverse operation check shown in my Patent No. 1,215,187, dated February 6, 1917.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment of the invention, the numeral 3 designates the operating or crank handle; 4 the shaft of the selecting or differential actuating wheels 5; 13 the register wheels; 12 the intermediate gears located between the selecting and register wheels; 73 the shaft of the carry mechanism, and 74, 75, 76, 80 and 81, a train of gears for rotating the selecting wheels and the shaft 73, upon operation of the crank handle.
' The crank handle is rotated completely in one direction or clock-wise for addition and multiplication, and completely in the opposite direction for subtraction and division from the same starting point. and the invention is designed to prevent reverse movement after the registering action is initiated until the completion thereof by rotation in either direction.
Located preferably upon the shaft 7 3, is a check wheel I, being a peripherally roughened or toothed disk, fast upon said shaft and having a peripheral notch a, friction plates 1;, and o, being located at one side of said wheel, and a coiled spring 18, bearing at one end against a collar 19. of said shaft and at its other end against the outer of said plates and serving to press said plates toward each other. said wheel t, acting as an abutment or bearing for the inner of said plates, or being integral therewith in which case the frame 20 will serve as an abutment or bearing. ()ne of the plates 1) and o is fast to the shaft 73 to rotate therewith as stated, and both of said plates may be fast on said shaft,
Located between the friction plates is a shifting member 16, having a radial arm, extending below the check wheel. A locking member or finger isshown at 00, having a slot and pin connection 14 with the, framing 20, upon the pin of which said member has arcuate or pivotal movement, said pin and slot connection admitting of a bodily movement of the locking member in the direction of its length. The locking member at has a pin and slot connection 15 with the arm 16 of the shifting member, whereby the locking member is moved upon the pin and slot connection 14, to cause its head or tooth 3 to pass into and longitudinally through the notch u of the check wheel, to assume opposite inclination relative to said wheel, as is requisite in the action of the locking member to prevent reverse movement of said wheel in either direction.
The plarts being in the positions shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and the crank handle 3 being operated to rotate the check wheel in the direction of the arrow, the friction plates will rotate therewith, and should reversal of movement of the crank handle be attempted, the plates 7; and v frictionally engaging the shifting member 16 will cause rotary movement of the same therewith, the slot and pin connection 15 causing pivotal movement of the locking member 00 upon the slot and pin connection 14, whereby the head 3 of the locking member is brought into lockin engagement with the peripheral teeth 0? the check wheel to prevent eitective movement of reversal. \Vhen the rotation of the shaft 73 and of the check wheel nears completion, the peripheral notch of said wheel will assume registering position relative to the head of the locking member, thereby admitting of reverse movement of the shaft 78 and of the check wheel in the reverse operation of the crank handle 3, wherein the head 3 of said member will pass into and longitudinally through said notch to oppositely inclined position during the first part of the reverse movement. until the head has passed out of said notch, when the engagement of the locking member with a suitable stop in, will maintain the said member with its head 3 close to the peripheral toothed edge of the check wheel, ready for instant engagement therewith should reversal be attempted.
In case reversal is attempted as stated the locking member through pin and slot connection' 15 will be moved pivotally upon slot and pin connection 14 to move its head y into locking engagement with the peripheral teeth of the check wheel. but owing to the slot of said connection 14 being longitudinal of the locking member, said member will be permitted to move also downwardly in the direction of its length in the engagement of its head 3 with said teeth, and in this downward movement, the lateral inclined wall of the lateral extension 17 of said member will engage the stop :11, the locking member having its head 3 thereby wedged against said wheel, and the resulting strain being transmitted from the head 3 through said memher to the stop a. In this way, a strong construction is provided for, and at the same time an approximately radial (and consequently quick or instantaneous) movement of engagement and release of the locking member with the check wheel.
The locking member is provided with an extension 17 at each side thereof, said extentions having each an inclined wall 17', and a stop m is provided at each side of the looking member.
