LOCK MECHANISM.
Application filed January 23, 1926.
My invention relates to lock mechanisms which are interposed between the operating members of associated but independently operated mechanisms to prevent the simultaneous operation of more than one of the mechanisms.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a lock means between the operating means of associated but independently operable mechanisms to prevent one of the mechanisms from being operated While another of the mechanisms is in operative position.
Another object of my invention is to place the lock means in a position where it can be seen easily so that an operator can readily see or determine the operative state or position of the mechanisms.
Another object of my invention is to make the lock means integral with the operating means so that the lock means can not be tampered with.
My invention is illustrated, in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a general perspective view of an apparatus adapted to emboss and vent emblems or similar articles and having operating cranks or handles embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a blank for an emblem as stored in the apparatus for the purpose of subsequent purchase and delivery and embossing.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of an emblem having John Doe embossed thereon in the apparatus and as finally delivered by the apparatus.
Generally speaking, the apparatus shown, for the purpose of illustrating my invention is an apparatus adapted to store blank emblems such as is shown in Fig. 2; adapted to feed these blank emblems into position to be embossed; adapted to emboss the blanks so fed into position with selected characters; adapted to deliver the embossed emblem after the embossing is completed as the emblem shown in Fig. 3 for instance; adapted to prevent the embossing on the blank as long as the blank is not in proper posit-ion to be embossed; and adapted to prevent any tampering with the means which regulate or determine the relations between the feeding or delivery means and the embossing means.

In apparatus of this kind, as shown in my Patent No. 1,494,839, issued May'QO, 1924, for instance, some complicated mechanisms are necessary and, due to the inter-relation of the mechanisms and the-necessity of operating the mechanisms successively, it is necessary that some means he provided to prevent the operation of one of the mechanisms while another of the mechanisms is in operative condition and it is further necessary to prevent tampering with the means which prevents simultaneous operation of the mechanisms.
Therefore, the present invention aims to prevent the operation of one of the mechanisms while another mechanism is in operative condition or position and to prevent the tampering with the means which prevent the sii'nultaneons operation of two of the mechanisms.
The apparatus shown in Fig. 1, selected to illustrate my invention, comprises, principally, the case A, the dial B, the pointer C, the operating crank or handle D, the operating crank or handle E, the coin slot F, the release knob Gr, and the delivery pan H.
This apparatus has a receptacle within the case A for storing the blanks shown in Fig. 2 and also has a feeding mechanism within the case A to feed the blanks from the receptacle into operative position for embossing and to feed and deliver them into the pan H after embossing and also has an embossing mechanism within the case A to stamp or emboss on the blank duplicates of the characters found on the dial B. The feeding and delivery mechanism is operated by the crank D while the stamping or embossing mechanism is operated by the crank E.
Neither the feeding and delivery mechanism, nor the stamping or embossing mechanism, nor the release mechanism by a coin, is shown in the drawing since they, in themselves, form no part of the present invention but the operating means thereof, as related to each other, does form a part in the present invention. It is sufiicient, for the purpose of the present invention, to refer to these mechanisms as feeding mechanism, embossing mechanism, and release mechanism, respectively.
The release mechanism normally holds the feeding mechanism and the embossing mechanism out of operative connection with their respective operating shafts and re leases these mechanisms into operative condition by means of a coin inserted into the coin slot F and pushed into the release mechanism by the knob G.
The crank D is secured to the shaft 10 which extends into the interior of the case A and operates the feeding mechanism when it is rotated and is put into operative connection with the feeding mechanism by the release mechanism.
The sector or dog 11 is formed integral with the crank D so that the form or disposition thereof can not be changed and has the outer face 12 substantially concentric with the longitudinal axis of the shaft 10.
The crank E is secured to the shaft 13 which also extends into the interior of the case A and operates the embossing mechanism when it is rotated and is put into operative connection with the embossing mechanism by the release mechanism.
The dog 14 is formed integral with the crank E so that the form or the disposition thereof can not be changed and has the outer face 15. V
The release mechanism in the case A normally holds the embossing and the feed mechanisms in inoperative positions so that either one of the cranks may be operated without operating the mechanism connected therewith.
When the required coin is deposited in the slot F and when the knob G is subsequently pushed downwardly, the coin is pushed into a position to release the feeding and embossing mechanisms or, in other words, operatively connects the feeding mechanism with the shaft 10 and the embossing mechanism with the shaft 13.
When the shafts are so connected to their mechanisms, the operation of either of the cranks would operate the corresponding mechanism. Likewise, the simultaneous operation of both cranks would result in undesirable embossing or undesirable spacing of the characters on the blank and in most instances results in breakage of some part of the mechanism. Such a condition causes a loss to the owner of the machine as well as to the person who has deposited the coin since he will receive, at best, only a battered blank which is of no use to him.
The undesirable conditions mentioned are avoided in the present invention as follows :After the feeding and embossing mechanisms are released by the coin asset forth and the cranks are in the normal or initial positions shown in Fig. 1, the crank E can be operated since the dog 14 clears the sector 11 as long as the crank D is in normal or initial position. This operation of the crank E, and consequently the embossing mechanism, causes no trouble since no blank has been fed into proper operative position.
The crank D operates the feeding mechanism as previously mentioned and must be rotated in a left handed direction, as viewed in Fig. 1, as far as it will go in order to completely feed one of the blanks into embossing position and must then be returned to the original or initial position in order to lock the blank into position in the indexing mechanism.
Now, when the crank D is in any position except that shown in Fig. 1, as the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 for instance. and an attempt is n'iade to operate the crank E, the face 15 of the dog 1 1 abuts the face 12 of the sector 11 and thereby prevents the operation of the crank E as long as the crank D is in any position other than that shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and thereby prevents the embossing mechanism from being operated while the blank is not in proper position for embossing.
After the coin has operated the release mechanism, and the feed mechanism has deposited the blank into proper embossing position, as set forth, the pointer C is rotated to point to any desired character found on the dial B and which is to be embossed on the blank, whereupon a forward rotative movement of the crank operates the e1n bossing mechanism and embossed that character on the blank. Other characters are subsequently and successively embossed on the blank in a similar manner since the completion of the embossing of one character automatically indexes and spaces the blank for the next character. After completion of the embossing operation by means of the crank E, the crank D is again moved com pletely rearwardly and forwardly, as was previously done, whereupon the embossed blank is ejected through the slot 16 and deposited in the pan H and the release mechanism is again put into normal or initial position ready to receive the next coin and subsequent operations as set forth.
VVith the sector 11 and the dog 14 on the cranks D and E, the embossing mechanism can not be operated as long as the blank is not in operative position and as long as the previous blank has not been ejected from the embossing position.
I claim 1. In an apparatus of the character described, a pair of rotatable cranks on shafts spaced apart laterally, each of said cranks normally held in a fixed initial position and movable from this position toward each other, a contact face 011 each of said cranks and disposed toward the other of said cranks and spaced therefrom when one of said cranks is moved toward the other of said cranks while the other of said cranks IOU is in its initial position, and either one of said contact faces moving into the path of the other of said contact faces when the crank thereof is moved from its initial position toward the other of said cranks.
2. In combination, a jonrnaled crank for operating a mechanism, a journaled crank for operating another mechanism, the journals of said cranks being spaced apart, a sector on one of said cranks and arranged to clear the other of said cranks when said one crank is rotated and when said other crank is in inoperative position, a dog on the other of said cranks and arranged to clear said sector and said one crank when said other crank is rotated and when said one crank is in inoperative position, and said sector and said dog being arranged to contact each other and thereby prevent the operation of either one of said cranks while the other of said cranks is moved from the inoperative position thereof.
3. In combination, a journaled crank for operating a mechanism, a journaled crank for operating another mechanism, the journals of said cranks being spaced apart, a sector integral with one of said cranks to prevent tampering therewith, a dog integral with the other of said cranks to prevent tampering therewith, and said sector and said dog arranged to contact each other and thereby prevent the rotation of either one of said cranks while the other of said cranks is moved from the inoperative position thereof.
4. In a vending apparatus, the combination of a case, a crank for operating a mechanism and disposed in full View on the outside of said case, a crank for operating the vending mechanism and disposed in full view on the outside of said case, each of said cranks normally held in initial position and movable from this position to operate the mechanism connected therewith, lock means on each of said cranks for preventing the operation of either one of said cranks while the other of said cranks is moved from its initial position, and said lock means disposed in full view on the outside of said case to show an operator whether said cranks are in operative or in inoperative positions.
5. In an embossing and vending apparatns, the combination of, a case, a crank for operating the feeding mechanism of the apparatus, a crank for operating the embossing mechanism of the apparatus, each of said cranks normally held in initial position and movable from this position to operate the mechanism connected therewith and lock means between both of said cranks for preventing the operation of either one of said cranks while the other of said cranks is moved from its position.
