Description
n01 Modl.) A. F. HYDE.
Chuck.
Patented March 22,1881.
I librarftfin N. F5918, PNOTOUTHOGRAPHER, WAQHINGTON, D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBE F. HYDE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CHUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,047, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed November 1, 1880. (No model.)
I 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBE F. HYDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chucks for Centering-Machines and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan yin g drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in chucks for centering-machines for the purpose of securing shaftings firmly and in a concentric position to the usual revolving centeringdrill,by means of which a central recess is made in theend of the shaft; and this improved chuck consists of a stationary cylindrical case, in combination with an internal movable ring having jointed links hinged to clamping-jaws that are movable on fulcra secured to the stationary case, the said internal ring being operated preferably by means of a screw-shaft located in stationary bearings and working within a laterally-adjustable rack, the teeth of which engage into teeth on the exterior surface of the internally-movable ring in a manner as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation and Fig. 2 represents a cross-section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts whereever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
a or represent the cylindrical stationary case, having central perforations, a a, through which the shaft to be centered is inserted.
b is the movable ring, properly turned, so as to fit nicely within the cylindrical case a, in which it can be turned around its axis by means of the screw-shaft 0, having screwthreaded end 0 working within the laterallyadjustable rack 01, the teeth d of which engage into the teeth I), that are made on a portion of the periphery of the said movable ring I), as shown.
e e e are the clamping-jaws, movable on the stationary fulcra ffj', and jointed in their outer ends to the ring I) by means of thelinks g g g, as shown. The links g g g may be dispensed with and the outer ends of the clamping-jaws e e ejointed directly to the interior of the ring b,,although I prefer in practice to use i the said links, as shown in the drawings.
To secure a shaft between the clamping-flaws of thechuck it is only necessary to turn the screwshaft 0, by means of a suitable handleor crank, 0", around its axis until the rack d and the ring b, with its clamping-jaws e e e, are moved to the positions shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, when the shaft is inserted between the clamping-jaws e 6 e, and the ring b turned around its axis in an opposite direction by means of the screw 0 and rack (1 until the jaws e' e e firmly grasp and hold the shaft between them,
i wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- In combinationwith the case a, ring I) 1), links g g g, and clamping-jaws e e e, the screwthreaded rack d d and screw-shaft c c, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBE F. HYDE.
Witnesses ALBAN ANDREN, HENRY CHADBOURN.
