FAUCET.
Application led August 11, 1916.
T0 all 107mm t may concern Be it known that I, GEORG GUNDERMANN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident ot Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to faucets, or the like, particularly of the type used in drawing liquids from barrels and kegs, and has as one object, to provide devices of this character with a locking mechanism which will prevent unauthorized persons from tampering with the same during the temporary absence of the operator.
Another object of this invention is to provide devices ot' this character, simple in their construction, strong, durable, eiiicient in use, comparatively cheap to manufacture and which may be readily operated.
lWith these and other objects in view this invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention as applied to faucets. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinalsectional view through the same, showing the key in dotted lines ready to be inserted into the lock. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the key supporting member, and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the lock casing.
Referring to the drawing, the faucet embodies a body portion 10, having a substantially vertical tapered opening 12 which communicates with a longitudinally extending inlet 13. The turning plug 14 of the faucet is substantially conoidal in contour, conforming to the shape of the vertical tapered opening 12 which is formed in the body portion 10, and is of such diameter as to snugly fit the opening but turn freely within. The plug 14 is provided with an outlet port or passage 15 which is registerable with the inlet 13 whereby the flow of the liquid may be regulated. The upper end of the turning plug 14 is provided with a stem 16 which is cut away leaving an upwardly extending arm 18 having formed at one end a circular bearing plate 2O having a metal cover and provided with an opening in which a rod 21 is inserted eX- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1916.
Serial No. 114,345.
tendingdown into a threaded recess 22 of the stem 16.V On each side ot the stem 16 1s formed recesses in which is adapted to slide a key supporting member. rlhis key supporting member is made of one piece of sheet metal hwing two side members 24-25 adapted to slide in the recesses formed in the stem 16, an apertured transverse portion 26 through which extends the rod 21 and outwardly extending key supporting portions 27, having their ends turned up as at 28 and 45. A spring 17 is interposed between the transverse portion of the key supporting member and the end ot' the stem 16, which normally holds the key supporting member in a raised position, the bearing plate 20 forming a stop to prevent any further movement.
A cylindrical casing 3G covering the locking mechanism and also giving a good appearance to the faucet, has a `flange 31 which is secured to a flange 32, formed on the body portion 10 by means ot' stub bolts 33. The inner face of the casing 30 is provided with two recesses 43 and 44 into which extend the ends 28 and 45 of the key supporting member which holds the turning plug in a locked position. The ends 28 and 45 are of different size being suited to the opening 43 and 45 respectively so as to insure correct positioning ot the parts; this arrangement also compels the correct re-disposition oi parts and full turn of the plug bei-'ore unlocking can again take place.
A key 34, which has a cylindrical portion 35, is adapted to lit over the stem 16 and has provided on each side thereof slots 3'? which are adapted to slide over lugs 38 formed on the stem 16. A. cover 39 pivoted to the casing 30 covers the opening formed therein to prevent'dirt and other foreign matter from falling into the locking means.
Itwill be seen from the foregoing that when it is desired to. unlock and turn the plug so that the` outlet port may communicate with the inlet branch, the key is placed over the stem and the lugs 38 engage the slots 37, the end of the key resting on the members 28 and 4,5, and by pressing down on the same the ends oi' the key supporting members are pushed down out of engagement with the recess 44 and 45, formed in the casing, thereby unlocking the same which will then allow the plug to turn freely and by reversing the operation, the plug will be locked again.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire Letters Patent on is In a faucet comprising a casing having an inlet opening, a turning plug mounted in said casing having an opening registerable With the said inlet opening, a stem extending from said plug having a recess formed therein, a spring-pressed locking member mounted in said recess, lugs on said stem, a casing covering said stem and se cured to said faucet, the casing having rekey having slots formed therein which re-' ceive said lugs.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 22nd day of July, 1916.
GEORG GUNDERMANN.
