Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY P. DREW, OF NEW YORK,
FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325.825, dated September 8, 1885. Applicntinn tiled July 28, 1"5 .I (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY P. DREW, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Faucets, of which the following is afull, clear,
and exact description.
' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding fpart-s in all the figures.
Figure lisaside elevation, partly in section, of one of my improved faucets. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the plug-spring. Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the plug-spring.
The object of this invention is to provide faucets. constructed in such a manner that the plug-springs can be readily adjusted as the pressure to which the faucets may be exposed may require.
rIhe invention consists in the combination, with the stock, theplug, the spring, and the screw-plug,l of a washer and screw, as will be hereinafter fully described and then claimed.
A represents the stock of the faucet, which has a vertical perforation tapering upward formed through it to receive the tapered plug B, The upper end of the plug B is squared and ts into a square hole in the inner end of the handle C, which is secured in place by a screw, D, screwed into the end of the said @111e The plug B has a transverse perforation Y formed through it for the passage of liquid,
steam, or gas, forming what is known as a straight-run faucet.
The tapered plug B is secured in place by a plug, E, screwed into ascrew-thread formed in the lower part of the inner surface of the stock A.
In the lower end of the plug B is formed a recess to receive a spring, F, by the elasticity of which the said plug B is held to its seat, and wear is taken up, so that the faucet will always be kept tight.
As usually constructed the spring F rests upon the inner endof the screw-plug EL With my improvement the inner end -of the screwplug E isrecessed, and in the said recess is placed a washer, G, which rests against the lower end of the spring F.
Through the center of the screw-plug E is formed a screw-hole in which is placed ascrew, H. The inner end of the screw Hrests against the center of the washer G, so that the tension of the spring F can be increased or lessened, as may be required.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl The combination, with the stock A,the plug B, the spring F, and the screw-plug E, having a screw-threaded-hole, of the washer G, interposed between the spring and screw-plug, and the screw H' resting against the said washer, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the tension of the said spring can be readily increased orlessened, as set forth.
' HENRY l?. DREW.
