TURNING PLUG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
1,222,1Y2. Patented Apr. id, illicit.
Application filed December 18, 1914. Serial No. 877,845.
To all whom it may concern:
of a piece separate from the body portion of Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. lVRAY, of the plug and carries a threaded post K for Rochester, in the county of Monroe and. cngagementwith a correspondinglythreaded State of New York, have invented certain opening in the plug, the post ll. being held 5 new and useful Improvements in Turning in place by a friction pin L which is driven Plugs;'and I do hereby declare the followthrough suitably provided openings in the to ing to be a full, clear, and exact description valve plug and in the post. of the same, reference being had to the are The reduced portion J carries an enlarge companying drawings, forming a part of ment or head M at its lower end, affording a this specification, and to the referenceshoulder N on which is supported a spring (l numerals marked thereon. for a purpose that will presently appear.

Valves of this type are emengagement with a locking member or plate, ployed where it is desirable to cleanse the which I will now describe. parts frequently, requiring the removal of The valve plug is held in operative relathe plug from the valve body, and it is tion to the valve body by a readily removthe purpose of the present improvement to able retaining device which is located beafford an arrangement that will reduce to a tween the valve body and the reduced lower minimum the difliculty encountered, or work end of the valve plug by means of the spring required in removing the plug from the actuated follower already described. To body. A further object of the invention is this end I employ a locking member or plate to simplify the construction and lower the R having a slotted portion S which engages manufacturing cost as much as possible. the plug in the manner shown in Fig. 1. To these and other ends the invention con- The locking member is recessed on its upper sists in certain improvements and combinasurface, as shown at T for engagement with tions of parts all as will be hereinafter more the lower edge E of the valve body, whereby fully described, the novel features being the parts are held together with sufficient pointed out in the claims at the end of the friction to prevent accidental displacement. specification. The lower surface of the locking member is In the drawings: engaged by the follower P, which, through Figure 1 is a sectional view showing one the action of the spring Q, serves to retain embodiment of the invention; the locking member tightly against the Fig. 2 is a plan view of the locking memvalve body and thus hold the plug in operaber, and tive relation with the valve body. When Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same. it is desired to clean the parts, it is neces- Similar reference characters in the several sary to remove the locking member R, and figures indicate the same parts. in order to accomplish this quickly and with In the present embodiment, the invention little difficulty I provide the locking memcomprises a valve body having inlet and her with a projecting portion or handle, outlet ports A and B and a tapered bore G. preferably of the form shown, as designated The bore C terminates in upper and lower at U. The shoulder formed on the lockedges D and E, and is adapted to receive ing member by means of the recessed pora plug F having an opening G, to be alined tion T is preferably beveled, as at V, and with the ports A and B when rotated, while the edge of the plate is also beveled at H is a handle carried by the plug for operpoints adjacent to the slotted portion S, as ating it. indicated at W, in order to provide sur- At its lower end, the plug F is recessed or faces that will permit the locking member cut away at l, and is further provided with a reduced portion, designated at J. The reduced portion J is preferably in the form to be readily placed in, or removed from looking position.
With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, in order to remove the plug from the valve body it is only necessary to impart a slight downward movement to the handle U, at the same time drawing the locking plate laterally, after which the plug can be removed from the valve body. The construction affords an extremely simple arrangement which can be manufactured at a reasonablecost and can be readily operated. The parts are so arranged that they can be quickly separated for purposes of cleaning, and the structure is entirely practical for use with liquid foods such as milk,
from the standpoint of sanitary requirements.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a valve body, of a rotary plug having a reduced lower end, a removable locking member slotted to engage said reduced end of the plug and adapted to be positioned against, the valve body, said locking member being recessed on its upper surface to engage the valve body, a shoulder at the end of the reduced portion of the plug, a follower arranged on the plug above said shoulder and having an inwardly directed flange at its top, and a Copies of this patent may be obtained for spring positioned between said shoulder on the plug and the flange on the follower.
2. The combination with a valve body, of a rotaryplug, a locking member slotted to engage the plug, said locking member being disposed between the valve body and the lower end of the plug and provided with a handle or projection whereby it can be positioned or removed, a follower arranged on the plug and engaging said looking member, and a spring cooperating with the follower. V i
3. The combination with a valve body, of a rotary plug, a locking member slotted to engage the plug, said locking member be ing disposed between the valve body and the lower end of the plug and provided with a handle or projection whereby it can be positioned or removed, a follower arranged on the plug and engaging said locking member, and a spring cooperating with the follower, the follower embodying a housing for the spring.
