To'aZZ whom it who concern 1 Be it known t at I, FRANK L. Hour, a-
citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Gage-Cocks,
of which the following is a specification;
to p'roducea device of this character which i V can be cleaned or repaired'without materially afi'ecting the boiler pressure.
Another object of the invention is to providea device in which is eliminated as far as practicable any danger of injury from escaping steam. I
A still further object is to improve the valve and valve seat'elements of this type of cock so' 'that'the valve seat maybe repeatedly dressed to accommodate the valve and the latter may be conveniently turned upon its seat for cleaning purposeswithout V disturbing any of the other parts of the der so vice.
With these objects in view the invention.
tures of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying draw- Figure 1, is a longitudinal section through I a gage cock embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectlon on the line IIII of Fig. 1. i l l Referring to the drawing, thedevlce comprises a tapered tubular member 2 havin suitable external threads for tightly fitting the same through the boiler head plate 4, the passage 8 through this member 2 being controlled by a valve plug 6. The outer end of the .member 2 is externally threaded for engagement by the inner end of a valve .casing 10. Within this casing operates a valve stem 12 which threadedly engages the outer end of said casing. .The inner end of the valve stem is of larger ,diameter than its threaded end and is provided with a packing ring 14, it being understood that the valve stem must be inserted through 'the inner enlarged end of the casing 10 and cannot be withdrawn through the outer end of the casing, thus guarding against careless operation of the valve allowing steam to ex- 7 GAGE-000K.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 8, 1914. Serial' No. 811,104.

with the valve chamber 18 at the inner end of the valve casin 10.
The outer endo and adapted to receive the shank of a p ug 20, the head of which operates as a valve seat for the head 22 of a needle valve, the shank 24 of which extends axially through the stem 12. The head 22 is tapered in both directions and ground for fittin both the valve seat and the inner end 0% the stem 12. To guard further against any leakofl' its seat, packing 26 is fitted in the outer end of the stem 12 about said shank and retained in place by the washer 28 which serves also to hold a handle 30 on the outer squared end of the stem 12. The shank 24 of the valve is provided with a kerf 32 in its outer end to permit the use of a suitable tool. for turning the valve and a pin 34 for retaining the washer 28 in place and efi'ecting outward movement of the needle valve when the valve stem 12 is unscrewed.
As'it is advisable frequently to test the be normally open. To make the test, the handle 30 is turned to unseat the valve '22, and Water or steam, as the case may be, will be allowed to escape in a lateral direction by way of the outlet tube 16..
Provision of the kerf 32 allows the valve 22 to be turnedto clean the contact between it and the valve seat 20, without removal of any of the parts or disturbing their adjustment. In case it should be necessary to rebeen detached by opening the valve plug 6 and insertinga bent wire through the passage, the bent wire being used because it enables the operator to perform the cleansing operation without danger of being scalded.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have produced a gage cock possessing the features of advantage enumerated as desirable and I wish it to be understood that while I have illustrated and described what now appears to me to be the preferred embodiment of the same I do not desire to be the passage 8 is enlar ed when the valve is Q restricted to the exact details of construcand provided beyond the outer end of the tion and organization shown and described, casing with a turning handle, a packing bebut reserve the right to make all changes tween the enlarged portion of said stem and falling within the spirit and scope of the ap the surrounding portion of the casing to pended claim. prevent escape of steam or water around I claim: the threaded portion of the said stem, a
