HAT FRAME.
APPLICATION FILED MAY I0. I9I6.
OTTO SAMISH, OF YONKERS, NEJV YORK, Assrenon To weiss a sai/rise, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAT-FRAME.
Application led May 10, 1916.
To @ZZ whom muy conce/m Be it lrnown that I, 'rro G. SAMISH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Yonkers, in the county oit W estchester and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Hat-Frame, of' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved frame for womens hats, arranged to prevent the frame from stretching and producing distortion of the shape of the frame, at the same time rendering the frame exceedingly strong and durable. i
in order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of an annular trame body or brim formed of one or more bias cut pieces of an open mesh fabric material, the Vbody having an upper portion and a lower or base portion, both portions being of frustoconical shape with the apeXes extending along a common meeting line, and drawing in means attached to the body at the said meeting line to maintain the shape of the hat frame.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part oi this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved hat frame; Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevationy of a portion of the hat frame: and Fig. 4 is a cross section of a modied form of the hat frame.
The annular body or brim 10 of the hat frame is made of two pieces of bias cut open mesh Jfabric material with the overlapping ends sewed or otherwise fastened together, and the body 10 consists of an upper or crown portion. 11 and a bottom or base portion 12, both of 'frusto-conical shape with their smaller base circles coinciding on a common meeting line. The upper edge of the upper portion 11 is provided with a binding 13 of tape or other material and containingI a reinforcing Wire Specification of Letters Patent.

ring 11, and the lower end of the base 12 terminates in an inwardly and upwardly bent flange 15 having its edge provided with a binding 16 containing a lreinforcing wire ring 17, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. Along the meeting line of the upper and lower body portions 11 and 12 extends. a drawing-in means, preferably in the form oil a plain or reinforced tape or ribbon wire 18, fastened by two rows of stitches 19 and 20 to the body 10 at opposite sides of the median line of the tape 18, which median line coincides with the meeting line of the upper and lower portionsll and 12.
In making the hat Jrame, the tape 18 and the piece of, fabric material for forming the body 10 are sewed together under a slightly different tension to draw in the body material at the point of attachment of the tape to insure the formation of the frusto-conical upper and lower portions 11 and 12 whereby a Grecian or concave eiiect is produced. By using a tape with the rows of stitches on opposite sides of the meeting line of the frusto-conical portions the body is held against longitudinal distortion, that is, lengthwise of the tape, as well as against up and down distortion. and consequently the shape of the hat frame is maintained at all times and an exceedingly strong and durable hat frame is produced.
ln the modified Jform shown in Fig. 4, the double frusto-conical shape is given to the frame body by the use of a drawing-in wire ring 30 fastened b v stitches 31 to the body 10 to form the upper and lower frustoconical body portions 11 and 12 as before explained. The wire ring may be either plain or covered.
It is expressly understood that I do not limit myselil to the drawing-in means shown and described, as the same may be varied without deviating from the invention.
After the hat frame has been made in the manner described, it is covered with velvet or a similar material in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention. l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-
A hat trame comprising an annular body tape extending around the exterior of said portions and having its median line coinciding With the said meeting line, and rows of stitches connecting the tape to the body at opposite sides of said median line.

formed of material cut on the bias, the bod7 having an upper portion and a, lower portion, both portions being made of frustoconical form with their smaller base circles coinciding on e common meeting line, the meeting edges abutting and being of a single thickness and flush with each other, a
