Be it known that l, JOSEPH BUGHALTER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cane Frame for Caps and Hats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved cane frame for caps, hats and similar articles of head gear and arranO'ec o r c r ar"l i t, lt en le the ticle evceedingl light, to insure comfort to the wearer, to reinforce the article, and to render the same flexible with a view to permanently maintain the original shape of the article even if roughly used.

For the purpose mentioned use is made of a cane frame having a side and a. top, of which the latter is united with the upper edge of the side, and the said frame supports the sides and top of the body of the cap, hat or simila article.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a perspective view of a uniform cap provided with the improved cane frame, part of the cap body being broken out; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of part of the same; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same provided with a lining intermedh ate the cap body and the cane frame; Fig. 4: is a sectional plan view of the joint between the parts of the upper side section of the cane frame; Fig. `5 `is a perspective view of a uniform cap provided with a cane frame having a lower or basal band of relatively stiff material and an upper band of relatively light material, part of the cap body being broken out; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross section of part of the same.

As shown in Figs. l and 2, the body A of the cap is provided with a vizor B and with the usual sweatband C, and within the body A is arranged a reinforcing frame D, of split cane or ratan, made of strips interwoven with each other to form an open mesh fabric, as indicated in the drawings. The reinforcing frame D consists of a top D and a side made in sections D2, D3, of which the lower section D3 is preferably vertically disposed while the upper section Specication of Letters Patent.

D2 is inclined upwardly and outwardly so asV to follow the shape ofthe cap body A, which `latter is provided with the usual top A, the upper side section A2 and the lower side section A3 stretched over the corre' spending parts of the frame D. In practice, the top D of the cane frame D is made of a singlepiece, and the upper edgeV upper edge of the lower section D2, and the said bindings G and H are fastened together by stitches or other means to securely unite the upper and lower sections D2, D2 with each other. The binding H is extended downward intermediate the cap section A3 and the frame section D3 to form a lining I for the cap section A3 and the lower end H2 of the said lining H and the lower portion A4 of the side A3 of the cap body are turned under at the lower end of the cane frame side section D3, and the turned under portion as well as the lower edge of the sweatband C are fastened together by stitches to unite the several parts. The bindings F and G are preferably reinforced by wires F2, Gr formed into ring shape to conform to the shape of the cap.

rlhe upper side section D2 of the cane frame D is preferably made of two parts or strips of a woven cane or ratan fabric, and the parts are overlapped at their ends and fastened together by a vertical binding I, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and A. The lower section D3 is preferably made of one piece with the ends overlapping and sewed together. The top D and the upper side section D2 of the cane frame are formed of strips interwoven to provide a large mesh, while the lower section D2 may be made of strips closely interwoven so as to be somewhat stiifer than the upper sect-ion D2 (see Figs. 5 and 6). V

Caps for winter wear are preferably provided with a lining (see Fig. 3), of which a portion J is interposed between the top D of the cane frame and the top A of the cap body, another double portion J is interposed The several parts are united by stitches atv the joints to insure the formation of a cap reinforced with a cane frame, which is exceedingly light to insure comfort to the wearer, and is sufficiently strong and flexible to reinforce the cap body with a view to maintain the original shape thereof.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A cap or the like, comprising a cap body and a reinforcing frame over which the said body is stretched, the body being made of a textile fabric and the reinforcing frame being made of cane, the reinforcing frame comprising a top provided with an overlapping edge having a binding, and a crown frame provided at its upper edge with a binding fitting against the seid top edge binding, and fastening means for fastening the said bindings together.

2. A cap or the like, comprising a cap body and a reinforcing frame over which the said body is stretched, the cap body being made of a textile fabric and having a top and an annular side connected with the top, the said reinforcing frame being made of cane and comprising a. top and L side made in upper and lower sections, and a lining interposed between the lower section of the said cane frame side and the lower portion of the said cap body side.
