Improyement in Seats for Chairs and "Stools Pz ztented Nov. 7,1871.

IMPROVEMENT IN SEATS FOR CHAIRS AND STOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,632, dated November 7, 1871.
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLETCHER W. DICKER- MAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Seat for Chairs and Stools, and Mode of Upholstering the same, of which the following is a specification Figures 1 and 2 are central vertical sections of stool-seats made and upholstered according to my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new construction of upholstered chair and stool-seats, and has for its object to simplify the same in such manner that they can be cheaply produced, and still retain any desired shape that can be formed of wood or metal, and possessing all the elasticity acquired in an ordinary cushion. It consists chiefly in making the solid part of the seat from a perforated recessed piece of wood or metal, which admits the application of the stuffing from beneath.
A in the drawing represents the rigid bottom of a stool-seat. It is made of wood or metal, of annular form, and recessed on the upper surface to form a projecting ledge. B is the covering, of plush or other material, stretched over the bottom and nailed or otherwise fastened to its edge or lower side.
The stuffing, of hair 'or other material, is introduced between the bottom A and cover B, after the latter has been fastened to the bottom through the hole in the center of the bottom A. By this mode of stuffing a perfect shape can be produced, and best workmanship obtained at little expense.
Such upholstering was heretofore performed by placing the stuffing upon the plain upper surface of the seat, and dispersing it thereon as well as possible, and then stretching the cover over the whole. In this manner a good surface and finish could only be obtained with great difliculty, and with the aid of experts, while my process can be satisfactorily carried out by ordinary hands.
The hole in the plate A is closed after the stnffin g by a plate, 0, secured against the lower face of A, as in Fig. 1; or by the projecting flange b of the stool-pivot D, as in Fig. 2, or in any manner to conform with the under finish of the seat.
The invention is applicable to all kinds of chairs and stools of whatever form and size.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The bottom A and cover B, constructed and applied together, as described, to admit of the application of the stuffing, in the manner set forth.
FLETCHER W. DIGKERMAN.
