Application filed March 11, 1916. Serial No. 83,623.
To all whom t may concern v Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. DENNEY, a citizen of the United States, residingat Lincoln University, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, ,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (loops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in coops and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the same is provided with a maximum of ventilation and whereby the coop is rendered substantially vermin proof.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a coop with novel and improved means whereby the door may be eiectively and conveniently locked in various positions.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved coop whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the .invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a coop constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 denote the bottom and top, respectively, of my improved coop, the same being formed of wood and octagonal in form, and said bottom 1 and top 2 are maintained in predetermined spaced relation by the interposed vertical strips 3 suitably secured to said bottom and top and arranged at opposite sides of one of the side faces of the coop.
Diametrically opposed to the vertical strips 3 are the Connecting braces 4 preferf ably of metal and angular in cross section so as to overlie adjacent faces of the bottom and top. The sides of the coop are closed with the exception of the space between the vertical strips 3, by the reticulated fabric 5f.
ln view of the foregoing, it is thought to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art that the construction of my Vimproved coop affords a maximum of ventilation which will render the coop substantially vermin proof and that the configuration of the coop in plan is such as to prevent crowding of the fowls.
D denotes a door adapted to close the space between the vertical strips 3 and the bottom 1 and top 2 and as herein disclosed, said door` D has one vertical marginal portion pivotally connected, as at 6, with the bottom 1 and top 2, while the inner face of the door D adjacent its top is provided with a vertically disposed recess 7 in which is arranged the downwardly disposed angular end portion 8 of the arcuate rod 9. Coacting with the end portion 8 is the bracket 10 suitably secured to the inner face of the door D, whereby it will be perceived that the arcuate rod 9 is pivotally engaged with the inner faceof the door D.
The top 2 has secured to its under face a plate 11 provided with a depending loop 12 through which the arcuate rod 9 extends. Said plate 11 Vis provided with a threaded opening 111 through which is adapted to be adjusted the binding screw 15 which is adapted to contact with the rod 9 and coact with the loop 12 in order to maintain the door D in its varying adjustments. The top 2 immediately above the opening 14 is provided with an enlarged opening 16 to permit the proper application of the screw 15, and it is to be observed that the outer end Specication of Letters Patent. Patentgd NQV, 28, 1916 of the screw 15 is provided with the winged n head 17 for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident.
My improved locking means as herein embodied readily permits the `door D to be effectively locked into closed or open position or in a partly open position when it is intended to only allow small chickens to passY adapted for use by reason of the conve'nience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
A coop provided with an entrance opening, a, swinging door for said opening, an arcuate rod provided with a depending end portion, means for pivotally connecting said depending end portion with the inner face of the door adjacent the top thereof, a. loop depending from ythe top of the coop and Y through which the arcuate rod passes, and 20 a. clamping member disposed through the top and coacting with the rod for holding the door in its various adjustments.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aHiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses. 25
SAMUEL L. DENNEY.
