Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 25, 1915. Serial No. 57,796. v
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vrangell, in the Territory of Alaska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionrelates to improvements in barrels, or like receptacles.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a cover for a barrel with novel means for quickly and easily opening and closing the cover without the necessity of handling the same. f Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a barrel equipped with my improved cover and opening device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a barrel which is provided at its upper end with hoops 11 and 11. Secured to opposite sides of the hoop 11 and extending outwardly from the barrel are the loops 12, said loops being disposed obliquely with reference to their transverse dimensions for a purpose which will appear later. A cover 13 is arranged to rest on the top of the barrel and is provided with a central opening 14. In diametrically opposite points in the wall of this opening are formed the notches or recesses 15 to permit the entranceof a tool for the purpose of prying off the lower ring, when the fabric is to be removed.` Disposed beneath the top of the cover is a piece of fabric 16, and disposed against the underside of this fabric is a flat ring 17, the opening of which registers with the opening 14. Bolts 18 are passed vertically through the top, the fabric, and the ring and are provided with the nuts 19 which firmly clamp the said parts together. The upper ends of the bolts are provided with eyesf20 through which 1s passed the loop 21 of a wire frame. The ends of this frame are extended in a horizontal plane laterally from the top of the cover as shown at 22 from whence they extend vertically downward through the before-mentioned loops 12, as shown at 23. The lower ends of these members 23 are extended outwardly in parallel relation to aV point in front of the barrel and thence directed inwardly toward each other, as shown at 23 where they are connected to a transverse handle bar 24 by means'of the bolts 25.
Assuming the lid to be in closed position, and it is desired to open the same, the handle bar 24 is grasped and lifted toward the top of the barrel. Y. This will slide the members 23 through the loops 12 and move the cover upwardlv and rearwardly, until the said cover reaches a point where it will overbalance the handle and then fall down at the rear of the barrel. .Upon pulling the handle bar forwardly and downwardly the lid will again be moved to a position on top of the barrel to close the same.
v It will be noted that the handle bar 24 will engage the front ofthe barrel so that the lid will be held at different positions in its opening and closing movements.
The cover 1s primarily intended as a device to catch rain water from a rain spout, the incline of the top toward the central opening causing all of the water to run on to the fabric and filter therethrough into the barrel. When the device is used as a display barrel in a store, a piece of wire screen can be substituted for the fabric so that a view Copies oi this patent may be obtained for live cents elch, by addressing the the barrel to hold the cover in any desired height above the top of the barrel.
