Be it known that I, MOSES HALL, Jr., 'of Osborn, in the county ot' Green, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Ash-House; and I do hereby declare that the'following is a full, clear, andV exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. i This invention relates to a new and improved method of constructing ash-houses and leach-tub combined,

whereby the same are rendered fire-proof, and by means of which ashes are more conveniently and economically separated from coals and dirt, and the same are more easily leached.

It consists of a hopper` and screen upon a fire-proof ash-box, and the whole placed upon a leach-tub, said leach-tub being provided with a screen or perforated plate, through which the lye passes oil'. In the accompanying plate of drawingsl Figure 1 is a. vertical sectional view of my invention, taken in the line y y, fig. 2.

Bis the hopper. C is the ash-box. D is the leachtub. S is the screen between the hopper B and ashbox` C. h are hooks, by'which screen S is secured to sides of hopper B. a are the lids. A is the frame of the box C. e is the'planking forming sides of same. fis a metallic lining covering inside of box C. A are handles, by means of which box is lifted from leach-tub D. a' are hooks, by means of which frame A is secured to frame G. G is'the frame of the leach-tub D. K K is the top of same, separating box O from leach-tub D. S is a raised screen or raised perforated plate upon the top or separator K K. o is an orifice or pipe, through which the lye passes od'. The hopper B is composed of two sides without ends, said sides being of sufficient height and of suliicient distance apart to contain therequired quantity of coals and ashes. Said sides are pro i vided uponv their upper edges with lids secured to the sides by hinges, so as that said lids will fold towards each other, meeting in the centre between the said sides; and said lids are slightly inclined to each, so as when closed to form a kind of roof. I

The ash-box C is formed ofv a. frame, A, in theshape roi' a truncated pyramid, said frame A being covered on the inside, except at the top, where it opens into the hopper, and except at the bottom, with a suitable planlza f ing, e, so as to form a box, and said planking e is covered with a metallic lining, f, on the inside, by means of which the said box C is rendered re-proof. One side of the frame A is higher than the other, so as that-the screen S is suiciently inclined, so as that the coals and dirt, when separated from the ashes, Vmay be conven= ently deposited outside the ash-house, in some receptacle for the same. Saidbox C-is provided with suitable handles, A', by means of which it may be removed from the leach-tub D, when necessary to4 clean the ashes from said box C. The said box C conforms to theshape of the frame A, and is larger at the bottom, so`that ashes 'contained in said box C will readily drop or fall out when said box C is removed from the leach-tub D. The lower parts of the frame A are bevelled off, as shown in the drawing, so as to fit into corresponding bevelled parts on the upper part of the frame Upon the frame A are suitable hooks, a', as shown by dotted lines in the drawing, which, engaging in staples in the frame G, hold the ash-box C securely upon the leach`tub D, and so that said box O may at any time be easily removed.

The leach-tub D consists of a frame, G, and a top, K K, composed of two parts, K, inclning downwards to each other, and mloetingin the centre of the leach-tub D, as shown in the drawing, fig. 1, the parts K being also covered with a metallic lining, so as to render said leach-tub D fire-proof. pon the sa-id parts K, and extending t'rdm one to the other, as shown, is a raised or curved screen or perforated plate, S', so asto form -a cha nber between said screen S and the parts K. In said chamber is an orifice or pipe, o, by means of which the lye is drawn off. The object of said screen S is to separate the ashes from the lye, and is a better means of accomplishing such purpose than the straw or other materials now in common use. The parts K form the bottom of the ash-house, as shown in the drawing. v

The operation is readily seen from the drawing. Ashes being sifted from the coal and dirt in the hopperB by the screen S, are deposited in the box C upon the parts K K and screen S. .The Screen S may then beremoved, and water poured upon the ashes inibox C, which said water will leachA through the ashes in said box, making lye, which, passing through the screen S', is drawn off at the orifice or pipe o.

Constructed as above described, it foi-mso. convenient and fire-proof ash-house and leach-tub combined.

I claim as new, and desire Ito secure by Letters Potent- 1. A fire-proof ash-house and leach-tub combined, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. The hre-proof box A, in combination with the hopper D and screen C, substantially as shown und described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The fire-proof leach-tub D, in combination with the ports K and screen S', substantially as shown and described, und for the purposes set forth.

4. A fire-proof box C, in combination xi'ith the fire-proof leach-tub D, substantially as shown and described, und for the purposes set forth.
