W 1 TNESS Hy VEN To mmm/@Kaw CHRISTIAN HEILRATH, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
TONG-WRENCH,
Specication of Letters Patent'.
Iatented Nov. 2i,
Application ned J une 19, 1916. Serial No. 304,486.
To all whom it may concern.' l Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN HEILRATH, a citizen ofr the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongl/Vrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference' iharked thereon, which form a part of this application.
` This invention relates to improvements in wrenches used f'or loosening and tightening nuts of all kinds, the object of the invention being to produce a wrench consisting of a pair of tongs pivotally mounted at a point off the center ofthe axis of the wrench, such tongs terminating in jaws arranged to engage the nuts in an immovable grip which, due to the peculiar pivoting. together of the tongs, will tend to grow tighter as the wrench is turned to loosen or tighten the nut. One of the tongs of the wrench is movable longitudinally with relation to the other so as to vary the space between the jaws for the purpose of fitting different sized nuts.
In making the statement that I aim to design a wrench which will fit all classes of nuts, I make this without reservation inasmuch as my improved tong wrench will grip and firmly hold a nut having any number of flat sides, or a nut which is perfectly round on its sides, or in place of a nut a collet may be placed over the nut4 and my wrench then used to engage the collet so that a square nut may be turned in a very limited. space.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish. by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings .similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure l is a side elevation of my 1mproved wrench. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 shows the jaws as they appear in engagement with a square sided nut. Fig. 4 is a view showing the jaws as they appear when engaged with a round nut or a colleton a square nut. Fig. 5 is a detached .view of a collet. Fig. is a plan view of a modified form of the wrench showing the laws in the reverse position vto that shown in rig. i.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, I first provide a carrier 1 which is provided with a recess 2 turnable within which recess is an actuating worm 3 of the type usual in wrenches. 'At one end of the carrier l is a pair of projecting ears 4 pivotally mounted between which as at 5 1s one of the tongs 6, such tong 6 being guided between projectadvancing the tong 8 longitudinally through the carrier l.
The outer end of the tong 6 terminates in a serrated aw l0 while the tong 8 terminates in a serrated end 11 arranged substantially parallel with respect to the inner edge of the jaw l0, such end ll in turn terminating in the projecting finger member l2 for a pur-- pose as will appear. l I
.The tong 8 is advanced through the carrier 1 to separate the jaws 10 and 11--12 to fit different sized nuts and also the pivotal relation of the tong 6 with respect to the tong 8 aids in this same function.
The jaws l0 and 1112 being engaged with thel nut, the wrench is turned, which brings the faces of the jaws 10 and 1l into a frictional grip with the nut, and the more there is a tendency to turn the wrench the tighter this grip will become due to the pivoting of the parts as at 5 ,od center of the axial alinement of the nut.`
The projecting nger member l2 greatly aids in the gripping of the nut for the reason that it engages a side thereof at a substantial angle to the surface l1 which engagement ltends to increase as the nut is rotated. Ihis action prevents the wrench from readily slipping o' 'the nut while in engagement therewith.
While my wrench is extremely advantageous in conjunction with square sided nuts, still one of the most important features of its use is that wherein it can be used with round nuts. When square sided nuts are used and there is limited space in which to move same for tightening or loosening, a
' a socket wrench having a removable socket or collet and I make this claim especially for my wrench.
In -Fig. 6 I show a modified form of wrench in which the jaws are in relatively reverse position to that shown in Fig. 1, In this 'view la designates the carrier, 6a the pivoted tong, S the longitudinally movable tong, and 3 the advancing Worin, It Will be noted that the jaws 10EL and lla are the reverse to the jaws 10 and 11, and the tong 81* 4 noves relatively the reverse f the tong 8. '..ihis 'structure may sometimes be found advai ageous, hence I make a showing of same y improved wrench is not only adaptfor the removing of nuts, but can be nrc-cd for the moving of round objects such as screws, pipes, or any other similar objects which are threaded in another part and which it might be desired to be moved.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a de viceas substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction ofthe device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claim.v
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A tong Wrench comprising a carrier provided with a recess and a longitudinal slot opening into the recess, a tong movable through the slot and provided with teeth along its edge projecting into the recess, a Worm turnably mounted in the recess and engaging said teeth, and another tohg pivoted to the carrier at a point olf center of the axis ofthe first named ton'g. saidtongs having coacting jaws.
In testimony whereof I aflix signature.
