EARL A. WHEELER AND WALLACE M. MORGAN, OF BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA.
Application filed May 1, 1916. Serial No. 94,681.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EARL A. \VHEELER and VVALLAGE M. MORGAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Bakersfield, in the county of Kern and State of Cahfornia,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to brooms, particularly to the type commonly known as push brooms.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a push broom in which the brushes or bristles after having been worn out and rendered useless, can be readily removed and replaced with new ones.
Another object of the invention is to provide a push broom having a handle which can be adjusted at the will of the operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character-which'will be of simple, strong and durable construction, efficient and reliable in operation, cheap to manufacture, and one adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and numerous other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification, and in which similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a push broom construction in accordance with the present invention;
handle being here shown broken away; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the broom head, taken on the plane of the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a longitudinalsectional view of a portion of the broom head, taken through one of the channels therein; and Fig. 5 is a detail end view of one of the L-shaped members.
The preferred form of the present invention comprises a rectangular shaped head 1, here shown as being made of wood and having a plurality of transversely spaced longitudinally extending rectangular channels 2 on the lower face thereof. Secured by suitable screws 3 to the upper side of the head 2 are the horizontal arms 4: of a pair of Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the
L-shaped members 5. Extending downwardly from the outer ends of the horizontal arms l are the upright arms 6 of said members, said upright arms 6 being disposed adjacent the ends of the head 1 and provided with rectangular openings 7 which are arranged in alinement with the aforesaid channels 2.
Disposed in the channels 2 and having their ends extending through the openings 7 in the L-shaped members 5 are metal bars 8. Extending downwardly from the head 1 are bristles 9, the latter being doubled midway of their length and passing aroundthe bars 8, thereby firmly securing them to the head, as will be readily understood Without further description. Whenever it is desired to replace the bristles 9 by new ones, it is' ends of the head, the arms 19 thereof being secured to the side edges of the head while their intermediate portions are disposed adjacent the upright arms 6 of the L-shaped members 5 and overlapping the ends of the bars 8 as clearly shown in the drawings. This feature will be found very convenient when sweeping along the curbstone.
Secured by suitable screws 10 to the upper side of the head 1 midway of the length thereof is a metal plate 11, the latter being provided with a substantially semi-circular flat upright flange 12midway of the width thereof. Pivoted to the flange 12 by a suitable pin or bolt 13 is the bifurcated end '.of a handle 14, said handle being adapted to swing to either side'of the head, and being retained in locked position by a suitable pin or bolt 15 which extends through alined apertures 16 in the bifurcated end of the handle and through apertures 17 arranged along the arcuate edge of the flange 12, as
will be readily understood. By this construction, it may be seen that when the thereby giving the same a'longer life, and
.may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, we do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than that set forth in the appended claims.
lVe claim as our invention:
-1. A. broom comprising a head havinga plurality of channels on the lower side thereof, L-shapedmembers having one of their arms secured to the upper side of said head, the other 21 ans of said members being disposed adjacent the ends of said head and provided Withopenings in alinement with said channels, bars'extending through said jopemngs and.be1ng disposed in said. channels, and bristles doubled midway of thelr length and passing around said bars.
2. A broom comprlsmg a rectangular head having a plurality of transversely spaced longitudinally extending channels on the lower side thereof, a pair of L-shaped members having one of their arms secured to the upper side of said head, the other arms of said members extending clownwardly and disposed adjacent the ends of said head, the last mentioned arms of said members being provided With openings ar ranged in alinement with said channels, bars disposed in said channels, and having heir ends received in said openings, bristles extending downwardly from said head, said bristles being doubled midway of their length and passing around said bars, U- shaped guards having their arms secured to the side edges of said head and having their intermediate portions disposed over the ends of said bars, and a handlesecured to the upper side of said head In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
