Application led .Tune 5, 1915.
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Y Be it known that I, ADAM MrnDnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reno, in the county of lVashoe and `State of Nevada, have invented a new and useful Clip, of which the following is a specifica-- tion.
This invention relates to an improvement in clips which may be applied to books so that the book can be attached to the pocket for retaining the book in the pocket, or it may be used for fastening papers and fabrics together, and as a clothes-pin.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
It will be evident that many slight changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts to be described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction as herein set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a View in elevation showing the invention applied to the cover of the book. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the clip and book. Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation showing the application of the clip to a book cover. lig. i is a top plan view of the clip, taken on the line eL-Li of Fig. 2, showing its application to the cover. Figs. 5 and 6 are front and rear elevations showing the clip applied to a pad for holding loose papers or other articles. Fig. 7 is a top plan view. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of application of the device shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Fig. 9 is a sectional view on the line 9 9 of Fig. 6. Fig. 10 is a view in front elevation of the clip detached, and Fig. 11 is a View in side elevation.
The clip is preferably made from a single length of wire returned upon itself to provide a pair of strands which are bent to form front and rear members and a bridge joining the upper ends of the members. The front member comprises the parallel strands 1 which are preferably in Contact. The lower terminal ofy the frent member yis Specification of Letters Patent.

closed. This lower terminal is bent upwardly and inwardly against the rear face of the front member to provide laterally extending eyes or loops 2, joined by a cross bar resting against the rear faces of the strands 1. rlhe upper end of the front member has its strands bent rearwardly at right angles to the front member to provide a bridge 3. At the rear end of the bridge 3 the strands diverge laterally and oppositely and form a transverselyT extending shoulder a. From the opposite ends of the shoulder l, the strands extend downwardly and preferably converge to form the rear member. The rear member is composed of two strands 5, which are slightly concaved longitudinally, and the lower terminals of the strands are brought together, that is, the strands extend or converge inwardly from their upper ends. The concaving, or bowing inwardly, of the strands 5 of the rear member toward the front member, as shown in Figs. 2, 8 and 11, serves to hold the rear member yieldingly in contact with material placed between the members throughout the entire lengths of the strands 5, as shown in Fig. 2, and throughout substantially their entire lengths as shown in Fig. 8. It is thus seen that in the use of this clip, the material is pressed against the front member, and is held between the members 1 and 5, throughout a considerable extent depending upon the thickness of the material in the clip. rlfhe clip thus exerts a firm binding action upon the material proportionally to the thickness of the material, the binding action being not at a single biting point, but taking edect throughout a long line 0f consecutively engaging points, the thicker the material placed in the clip, the greater will be the pressure on the strands 5 to straighten the same, and the greater will be the pressure of the bowed strands against the material, as the thicker the lmaterial the greater is the engaging lengths of the bowed strands. By this peculiar construction, a clip is provided which automatically adjusts itself and its binding action to the thicknesses of materials placed between the members of the clip. The lower ends of the strands 5 en tend or 1'iai.e outwai'dly, as at G. 'The cross bar or transverse portion 7, of the terminal of the front member, rests upon or engages the strands 5 of the rear member, forming a tight closure between the two members.
1n Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, the clip is shown as applied to the co-ver of a book. The strands 5 are inserted through openings 8 in the cover 9 and extend parallel withthe inner surface of the cover. Bearing plates or straps 10 are inserted through the cover from the exterior, and the ends are'bent against the inner surface of the cover, the flaring ends 6 of the clip resting or bearing against the plates.
The shoulder t engages across the -outer face of the cover 9 and holds the bridge portion 3 away from the cover in an outwardly projecting position. It also holds the rear member flat against the inner side of the cover 9 and keeps the strands 5 from sliding downwardly against the inner side of the cover. y
Applied to the inner side of the cover is a lining 11 of paper for maintaining the rear member or strands 5 against the cover portion 9. These bearing plates 10 prevent lateral movement of the clip and assist in vpreventing the terminals of the strands 5 from being forced through the cover 9, especially when the cover is made of some light material. i
lWhen the terminal of the front member is raised, considerable pressure or strain is placed against'the ends 6 of the strands 5 of the rear member, and the strands 5 are caused to bow, increasing the concavity of the strands, thereby producing a tension upon the front member which insures its return into engagement with ythe rear member, for confining the papers or articles between the two members. Y
In the application of the clip, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, the terminals of the strands 5 are connected together by a strap or fastener 12, which encircles the rear member and passes through a pad or board 13, and the terminals 14 of the strap or fastener are bent against the opposite sideof the pad. The clips can be fastened to the book covers or pads in any suitable manner-,but I haveV larged terminal,
vline withoutstraining the clip.
Another feature of this invention is in the peculiar construction of the lower terminal of the front member. The bending of the ytransverse portion or lower end 7 of the front member rearwardly, so that it engagesthe rear surfaces of the strands 1,produces the eyes 2, thereby forming an enwhich affords greater strength to the terminall of the'frontmem-v ber, and when the enlarged terminal is brought into engagement with the strands of the rea-r member a greater bearing surface is provided for conining papers and articles therebetween. AWith an enlarged terminal of this character there is nol danger of the terminal becoming weakened, due to theconstant raising of the front member by the terminal, and thereby losing its resiliency and gripping power.
vWhat is claimed is,-

A clip comprising a front member, a rear member, and a bridge joining the upper ends ofthe members, said members and l bridge comprising a single length of wirer returned upon `itself to provide the front member having a pair of strands, said strands being rolled laterally and oppositely from the lower end of the front member to, provide lateral loops thereat Lwhich are joined across the inner face of the front member, the strands being turned inwardly at right angles from the top of the front member to provide ythe bridge, and being diverged vlaterally and oppositely from the rear end of the bridge to provide a transverse shoulder across the top of the rear member, therstrands of the rear member extending downwardly from4 the opposite ends bridge comprising a single length of wire returned upon itself to provide the front member .having a pair of strands, the s'trandsof the front member extending l in contact throughout substantially the lengthv of lthe front member and being rolled laterally andV oppositely from the lower end ofthe front member to provideY loops at the opposite sides thereof whichare joined :across the inner face of the front member, .the strandsV at the upper end of the nfront member being the bridge, and being diverged laterally and oppositely fromthe rear end of the bridge to provide a transverse shoulder across the` reanmember converging downwardly from the opposite ends of said shoulder to a point vturned inwardly at irightangles to providerV top of the rear member, the strandsof the,
