GEORGE W. BAILEY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
WINDOW-SCREEN.
Application led June 25, 1915.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Screens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in window screens and particularly to window screens which are adapted to open and close with the window sashes The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and cheap device of this character which can be quickly and easily applied to a window frame and to a window sash.
Another object is to provide a rolling window screen which is arranged to open and close with the window sash without interfering in any way with the ordinary operation of the same or the locking or unlocking of the window.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a window frame and sash showing my improved screens mounted thereon with the window in closed position, Fig. 2 is a Similar view showing the sash partly opened, Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2, and Fig. l is a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents portions of the side stiles of a window frame and 11 the upper transverse member or heading thereof. In the upper ends of the said stiles there are formed the rabbets 12. Disposed between the upper ends of the side stiles is a metal or other suitable casing 13, said casing having an end wall 14.- provided with a circular opening 15 for .the pintle 15 of a spring roller 16. The other end wall 17 of the casing is provided with a slot 18 receiving the iiattened pintle 19 of the roller.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. *7, 1916.
Serial No. 36,296.
Extending from opposite ends of the casing are the apertured tabs 2O which are seated within the rabbets 12 and secured to the stiles by means of the screws 21. l/Vound on the roller is a strip of screening 22 the free or outer end of which is secured to the upper end of the upper sash 23 of the window. Thus when the upper sash is lowered the screen will be pulled so that it is unwound from the roller and covers the opening between the top of the sash and the top of the window frame. When the sash is raised, the spring will rewind the screen thereon or return.
It will be noticed that the casing lits snugly up against the under side of the heading of the window frame and extends between the upper ends of the side stiles, this position insuring that no water will enter the casing to rust the screen or the journals of the roller. Secured on the inner faces of the end walls of the casing and provided with openings to receive the pintle end of the roller are the concavo-convex plates or disks 241 which hold the roller against longitudinal sliding movement.
By substituting cotton or like cloth, varnished or otherwise treated, for the wire screen, the device may be readily adapted for use as a ventilator.
What is claimed is:
A roller screen comprising an elongated casing having openings in the end walls thereof, longitudinally extending attaching tabs at the end of the casing. and a spring roller mounted within the casing, pintles on the ends of the roller for reception in the casing openings and inwardly extending and centrally apertured concave-convex disks secured to the end walls of the casing for receiving the said pintles and for preventing longitudinal movement of the roller within the casing.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. BAILEY.
Witnesses:
