To 1117// 11,'71/0'111l it may concern/s Be it known that I, CHARLES FRED BARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVinchester, in the county of Frederick and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vindow-Screens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in screens for windows; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efiicient detachable screen which is mounted in a box and adapted to be removably held to the frame of a `window and provided with a cover to which one end of the screen is adapted to be secured, said cover being provided with hooks whereby the latter may be fastened to a window-sash, the screen unwinding and winding as the sash is raised and lowered.

My invention comprises various other details of construction and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then speciiically defined in the appended claims.

I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure I is an elevation showing my screen as applied to a window and sash. Fig'. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box containing the screen.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a window-sash of the ordinary construction, and B a window-frame provided with the ribs C. which are seated in the faces of the windowframe and which serve as guides in the vertical movement of the sash.

D designates a box, which may be of any material, shape, and size and is of a width suitable to iit between the ribs C, which form the guides for the sash. Said box has a socket member E iixed to one end thereof, and the other end F of the box has an aperture F to receive a spring-actuated lug of the usual construction mounted witbin the end of a shaderoller. Said roller is mounted at one end in said socket member and thc other end in the removable end of the box, as described.

K designates the cover to the box, to which one end of the screen is fastened, as shown in the drawings, and L L designate hooks which are pivotally connected to said cover and are adapted to engage over the pins N, carried by the sash, as in the manner shown clearly in the drawings. Said box has at one end spurs O, and Q designates a slide against which a spring Q bears, the other end of said spring bearing against thc end wall of the slot R, formed in said box. The outer end of the slide Q is provided with spurs S, which are designed to engage a portion of the frame of the window after the box has been adjusted in place, whereby the latter may be securely held stationary.

From the foregoing it will be readily understood that a screen and apparatus as illustrated may be easily and quickly applied to any ordinary sash by first adjusting the box in the manner described and connecting the lid of the box to the lower end of the sash, and as the window is raised the screen will unwind, and as the sash is lowered the screen will wind upon the roller in the same manner that a window-shade winds upon its roller.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A window-screen comprising a box, a spring-actuated roller journaled therein, a screen designed to wind upon said roller, spurs projecting from one end of said box and adapted to engage a window-frame, a slide carried at the opposite end of said box, spurs upon said slide designed to engage the opposite sides of the window-frame, a loose lid for said box to which one end of said screen is fastened, fastening-hooks connected to said lid, a sash, and pins thereon adapted to be engaged by said hooks, as set forth.
