SAW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
Application filed February 19. 1914. Serial No. 819,651.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES ELL-esoy, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, county of Nassau, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saws, the following being a full, clear, and exact disclosure of the one form of my invention which I at present deem preferable.
. For a detailed description of the present form of my invention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation ofmy device; Fig. 2 is a vertical central section thereof; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the guides; Fig. 4 is a rear view of the device and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the end of the guides.
My invention relates to a saw particularly devised for cutting out sections of flooring or other surfaces which have no exposed edge onwhich to begin a cut.
Referring to the drawings, B, B represent two parallel guidebars-mounted on a retaining base D, which stands at right angles to the bars, and embracing between them a sliding block A which is normally held in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 by means of a compression spring C which is interposed between the block and an abutment on the guide B. In block A is mounted the shaft of a semi-circular saw S, the shaft also being provided with an operating handle which is offset from the guide B as appears in Fig. 1. h'urmally the saw S is maintained by the spring C in the position shown in Figs. l and 2 with the saw projecting below the lower surface of the base D. The saw is journaled on the block A by means of a block A1 against the rear side of which the saw S is seated and retained in place by screws s. A pin I) is passed through the block A1 and has an enlarged portion upon which the said: block and the saw secured thereto are free to rotate. A separating washer 7) is placed between the block A and the block A1 to prevent binding of the saw. The smaller portion of the pin P passes through the block A and is secured therein by a nut. .l rod K extends upward from the bloeit A through the spring c and also passes through the cross-bar which joins the two guides B, B at the top, While the said cross piece is turned over at its rear edge to form a grip or handle V.
The handle H is detachably secured to the block A1 by means of the screw It' and a thumb-nut thereon. The lower end of the handle H enters an undercut slot in the outer lupper or non-cutting position. By holding the apparatus down, either with the hand or grip V or with the foot or base D, and pull# ing up on the handle Il the block A can be readily drawn upwardfin the guides against the force of the spring until it is caught by the latch T.
On the under side ot' the base D are two pointed lugs d which may be used if desired tp prevent the sliding otl the base D on the l oor.
In operation the base D is placed against the floor lV or other surface in which the cut is to be made, while the block A is drawn up and latehed. The periphery of the saw will be ona line with the lower surface of the base D and in contact with the Iloor along the line to be cut. the plane of the saw being made to conform to the direction of the cut. Then the base D will be securely held b vthe foot, or other pressure, such as might be exerted through the grip V, and the latch T moved back b v the finger projecting upwardly from said base and of a strength to resist the side thrust thereon, a carrier traveling in said guideway, a saw# block journaled on said carrier, a flat saw attached to said saw block, said saw having lto release thc block A and allow spring C to its edge convexly curved in the plane of the blade, the thickness of the sew beingsupplemented by said block, a spring acting to press the saw beyond the underside of the base, a rear\vardlyextended grip attached to'v and closing the upper end of said guideway, and a handle attached to said saw block.
Q. A device for sawing -through oors or -other Het surfaces, comprising a substantial. frame, comprising a base placeable on-a flint surface and upon which the operator may place his foot, spaced rigid uprights affordnga guideway between them, a carrier slidable in said gnideway' and e block pivoted to said gudeteyI and carryingend reinneoeeio i forcing a Hat convex edged saw so that the latter may be projected beyond the Work en-` gagng face of saidbase and thereoscillated,
" ing his foot upon the base;
, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, before two subscribing Witnesses, thistwenty-sixth day of.January, 1914.
