T 0 all whom t may concern Be ,it known that I, VViLLrAM J. NESBITT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Heel-Clamping Means; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to heel cutting apparatus; more particularly to improvements in the means for gripping or clamping the heel so that the heel is held firmly in position while it is moved past the saw or other cutter to cut away a part of the heel.

The main object of the invention is-to dispense with the heel abutment heretofore used, and simplify the heel clamping means to permit of the heel being clamped by a single operation.

Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a careful consideration of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is an elevational view showing a portion of the heel cutting apparatus with the improved heel clamping means; Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged broken elevational view of a portion of the heel clamping means.

The improved heel clamping means may be used in connection with any suitable form of heel cutting apparatus, or those forms disclosed in my patents dated Sep. 1, 1914, NOS. 1,109,137, and 1,109,139. Y

Any suitable means may be employed for adjusting and moving the shoe 5 relatively to the cutter or saw 6. The means shown in this instance consists of the platform 7 the table 8, movably vmounted on the platform 7 to carry the shoe 5 past the cutter 6, and the table 9 to adjust the shoe laterally of the cutter 6 so that the desired part of the heel 10 of the shoe 5 may be cut o by the cutter 6.

The improved heel clamping means consists of the lower plate 11 and the upper plate 12 which are disposed in substantially the same vertical plane and have the adjacent edge portions 13 thereof curved and adapted to fit in the crease'14 between the heel seat 15 and the heel 10 of the shoe 5. The lower plate 11 is stationarily mounted, being aiiiXed to the table 9 by the screws 16 in this instance, andthe upper plate 12 is secured to the pivotally mounted lever 17 by bolts 18 or other suitable means. As shown,

the lever 17 maybe provided with a handle 19 on the forward'part thereof, and it has on its rear end the pivot 20 which is adapted to iit in ,any one of the spaced openings 21 provided in the upper part of the post 22 which is mountedv at the rear of the table 9. On one or both of the

11, and 12 is provided a lateral projection or ledge 23 which is disposed adjacent to the curved edge portion 13 and is substantially parallel to the curved edge portion 13. The projection 23 has arranged longitudinally thereon a row of pins or teeth 24 whose pointed ends 25 terminate short of the edge of the curved edge portion 13 so as not to interfere with the latter being quickly placed in the crease 14.

From the foregoing the manner of use and the advantages of the invention will be evident to those skilled in the art, it being understood that the shoe 5 is placed on the lower plate 11 to have the edge portion 13 of the latter tted in the crease 14, and then the lever 17 is moved downwardly to have the edge portion 13 of the upper plate 12 itted'in the crease 14. When the lever 17 is pulled down the edge portions 13 fitted in the crease 14 prevent sidewise movement relatively to the cutter 6, and the teeth 24 are pressed into the heel 10 adjacent to the heel seat 15 and they act effectively to prevent forward movement relatively to the cutter 6l so that the unsatisfactory abutment heretofore used to engage the forward part of the heel can be dispensed with and the clamping of the heel can be effected by a single operation.

I claim:

The herein-described heel clamping means consisting of upper and lower plates disposed in substantially the' samev vertical plane and having the edge vportions thereof curved and adapted to fit ,in the crease between the heel seat and the heel of a shoe, the lower of said plates being stationary relatively to the upper of said plates, a pivotally mounted lever on which the upper of said plates is mounted, said plates being y provided with lateral projections adjacent minate short of the edge of the curved edge portions of the plates.
