GUIDE FOR BAND-SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,172, dated May 14, 1889. Application filed May 4, 1888. semi No. 272,817. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. BAoKER,"of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Guide for Band-Saws, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in band-saw guides, and has for its object to simplify the construction of the same, and to provide a means'whereby the parts may be readily and expeditiously manipulated, and wherein the guide may be adjusted to any width of saw to effectually control the same.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, partially on line a; a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line 3 y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the rear clamping-jaws. Fig. 5 is afront elevation of a band sawing-machine with my improved sawguide applied. Fig. 6 is a rear View of the guide and a part of the machine-frame upon which it is mounted, the said frame part being broken away to show the pulley 12,.against which the back of the saw runs.
In carrying out the invention the body of the guide 10 is provided upon its under face with a dovetail groove, 11, adapted to receive a similar rib integral with or attached to any suitable support,and the guide is also provided upon its under surface at one side of the groove 11 with a rub or wear wheel, 12, and upon the opposite side of said groove with a set-screw, 12. "This wheel or pulley 12 takes the wear from the guide -bed, in the usual manner, as the back of the saw engages it, instead of the bed 13. The said guide 10 consists of a horizontal member, 13, which forms the bed, and an upwardly-extending perpendicular member, 14, integral with its inner face, which member is provided with a longitudinal flange, 15, integral with the bed at or near its face. The member 14 does not extend the full length of the bed 13, but terminates at a point near the forwardend of the bed. The forward end, 16, of said bed is provided with a vertical transverse rib, 17, and a sec- 0nd transverse rib, 18, which latter rib is angular, commencing at the termination of the member 14 and extending outwardly to the rear side of the bed, and then along the edge thereof, terminating at the forward edge, 16, as best shown in Fig. 1. The bed is also provided with a recess, 19, which recess is cut in the edge 16 at a point near the short arm of the rib 1S.
Two parallel jaws, 20 and 21, are provided, which jaws have inner extensions, 22 and 23, integral with their respective forward ends, and are held a distance apart by means of knuckles 24 and 25, formed upon their inner sides, and a bolt, 26, passing through said knuckles, whereby the two jaws are not only spaced, but held to reciprocate laterally.
The jaw 20 is adapted to remain, essentially, stationary, or to move only upon the guide 10. To this end the outer face of the jaw 20 is broughtin engagement with the contiguous face of the member 14 of the said guide, the flange 15 of said member projecting over upon the upper face of thefjaw, as best shown in Fig. 1. The member 14 of the guide is provided with a longitudinal slot, 27, through which a screw, 28, is projected to a connection with the outer face of the jaw 20.
The rear end of the jaw 20 is provided with a lug, 29, projecting outward and rearward at right angles thereto, in which lug a screw, 30, is secured, which screw is adapted to turn in a suitable threaded nut, 31, attached to or integral with the outer face of the vertical member 14 of the guide. Thus when the screw 30 is manipulated the jaw 20 may be carried forward or rearward, as desired, being guided by means of the screw 28 in the slot 27.
The forward end of the jaw 20 is provided with a dovetail projection, 32, upon which a block, 33, is adapted to slide, having a suitable dovetail recess in its .under face. block 33, which is a metal block, is preferably made angular, one member being adapted to extend rearward at the back of the jaw 20, being secured to said jaw by means of a suitable screw, 34.

call an adj Listing-block, has attached to its outer end face a block of wood, 35, the block being placed so that the grain of the wood will come in contact with the saw, or approximately so, as will be hereinafter set forth. It will be observed from the above description that by manipulating the screw 34 the angular guide-block may be carried to one side or the other of the jaw 20, the wooden block 35 following the movements of the guide.
The jaw 21 is provided at its outer end with a block of wood, 36, similar to the aforesaid wooden block 35, the said block 36 being rigidly attached to the jaw 21 immediately opposite the block 35. The two blocks are secured, the one to the jaw 21 and the other to the guide-block 33, by means of a screw and washer, or in any other suitable or equivalent manner.
A channel or way, 37, is formed upon the upper face of the guide-bed 13 by means of the parallel ribs 17 and 18, in which two angular guide-blocks, 38 and 39, are adapted to slide, the said guide-blocks consisting of a horizontal member, which member is located in the said way 37, being provided upon the center of their opposing faces with a vertical recess, 40, through which recess a bolt, 41, is projected to a connection with the bed of the guide, whereby the said guide-blocks may be held in a fixed position. The horizontal member of the guide-block 39 is of greater length than that of the block 38, whereby their vertical members 42 and 43, which extend forward from and at right angles to the horizontal members, are broughtface to face, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The contiguous faces of the members 42 and 43 of the said guide-blocks 38 and 39 are provided with dovetail or wedge-shaped grooves, in which wedge-blocks 44 are inserted, as best shown in Fig. 2. The guide-blocks 38 and 39 may be made of iron, steel, or equivalent metal; but the wedge-blocks 44 I prefer to construct of brass.
The wedge-blocks 44 are adapted to form a guide for the heel or inner side of the saw 45, the wooden blocks 35 and 36 constituting a guide for the outer or cutting edge thereof. The several guide-blocks 38 and 39 are laterally adjusted, so as to bring the contiguous faces of their members closer together or farther apart, by means of screws 46, passed through the rib 18 to an engagement with the ends of the said blocks, as best illustrated in Fig. 1.
The rear ends of the jaws 20 and 21 are united by means of a set-screw, 47, passing through the outer jaw, 21, into a suitable nut inserted in the inner edge of the jaw 20.
In operation the device is adjusted to any width of saw through the medium of the screw 30,whieh,when turned, carries forward or rearward, as the case may be, the jaw 20, and also the jaw 21, the two being united.
WVhen the jaws have been carried back a sufficient distance to admit of the heel or inner end of the saw being brought between the wedge-blocks 44 of the guide-b1oeks 38 and 39, as shown in Fig. 1, the outer jaw, 21, is carried inward on its forward end by turning the screw 47 until the head-block 36 is brought adjacent to said saw near its cutting-edge. This having been effected, the opposite headblock, 35, upon the jaw 20, is brought to a similar position by the manipulation of the screw 34.
While I have illustrated a device in the drawings for a right-handed mill, I do not confine myself to this particular construction, as it may also be constructed and adapted for a left-handed mill.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a ribbed guidebed and spaced pivoted jaws adapted to slide upon said bed, having secured to their outer ends adjustable clamping-blocks, of parallel angular guide-blocks having the contiguous faces of their vertical members recessed to receive a soft-metal block, and means for adjusting the jaws laterally and endwise, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a ribbed guidebed and pivoted spaced jaws sliding upon said bed, one jaw being provided with an adjustable clamping-block upon its outer end and the opposite jaw upon the same end with an opposing fixed clamping-block, of angular guide-blocks adj ustablc upon the guide-bed, the vertical members of which guide-blocks project upward between the opposing jaws, having grooved contiguous faces and metal blocks secured in said grooves, and means, substantially as shown and described,for adjusting the jaws endwise and laterally and means for adjusting the guide-blocks, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with a ribbed guidebed and pivoted spaced jaws sliding upon said bed, one jaw being provided with an adj ustable clamping-block at its forward end and the other jaw with an opposing fixed clamping-block, angular guide-blocks sliding upon said guide-bed, the vertical members of which project upward between the inner faces of the jaws, having grooves in their contiguous sides, and soft-metal blocks inserted in said grooves, of a screw secured to one jaw and passing through a nut upon the guidebed, a screw uniting the rear ends of the jaws, and adjusting-screws passing through the said guide-bed into the said guide-blocks, all combined to operate substantially as and for the purposes specified.
