Description

Unrrsn STATES CLARENCE A. SHERMAN,
PATENT @tarea.
OF PLOVER, WISCONSIN.
CIRCULAR-SAW GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,563, dated October 19, 1880,
Application filed May 10, 1880.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. SHER- MAN, of Plover, in the county of Portage and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and Improved Circular-Saw Guide, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for preventing the lateral vibration of a circular saw while running.
The invention consists of a pair of laterallyadjustable guide-arms and guides fixed on an adjustable bar that passes laterallythrough a centrally-mortised reversible sliding block, which block and its attachments are held in place by means of a cam-operated bar.
Figure l is a plan of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line at 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, Arepresents the bed-plate, which is secured to the saw husk or frame by four screws, to a. B is the sliding block, provided on upper and lower sides with V- shaped grooves b b and resting on the V- shapedways c of the bed-plate A, so that it may slide longitudinally on said bed-plate A without danger of lateral displacement. Said block B is provided with a mortise, (I, extending entirely through it from side to side, and is provided also on either face with rectangular grooves f running centrally across it. Through this mortise d of the block B the bar 0 is inserted, having in one end a screw, 0, on which is a wheel, D, provided with an internally-threaded hub, as shown at b, by means of which wheel D the bar 0 is adjusted. This wheel D is held in place by the bearing D, that is secured to the end ofthe block B, and has its lower edge engaged in the annular groove b of the hub of said wheel D. On the opposite end of this bar 0 are fixed the two guide-arms E E, which guide-arms E E are held in place by the set-screws h h, thatenter through their ends and press against the side of the said bar 0. These guide-arms E are set parallel to each other, and have theirinner (No model.)
a circular opening is formed between them. The free ends of said guide arms E have transverse mortises 70 formed in them, through which mortises the saw-guides F are inserted, and held adjust-ably in place by set-screws l.
The sliding block B and its attachments are held in place by the clampingbar G, which bar G is secured at one end of the bed-plate A by a bolt, on, and extending longitudinally and centrally over the 'said bed plate A and the said block B, and is fitted into the upper rectangular groove,f, of the said block B, and has its other end fitted over the cam-pin n, which projects upward from the other end of the said bed plate A, and the cam lever H, which is pivoted on the top of the cam-pin n,'above the bar G, operates to hold the said bar G firmly down upon the sliding block B, so as to retain said block B in any position.
This device is designed to prevent the lateral vibration of the circular saw to make it runtruly in a vertical plane, and for this purpose the guide-arms E are adjusted on either side of the saw, as indicated in dotted lines at K, and the guides F pressed against the saw, as shown, and held in place by the set- I screws Z.
This device can be applied to a right or left handed saw mill by reversing the block B with its attachments.
The wheel D, working directly upon the bar O, prevents the possibility of the said bar 0 or the guide-arms E E getting out of place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A circular-saw guide constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of bed-plate A, sliding block B, provided with mortise d and grooves f, bar 0, provided with screwO, wheel D, clamp D, guide-arms E E, guides F F, and cam-actuated bar G, as set forth.
2. In a circular-saw guide, the combination, with the bed-plate A, provided with V-shaped ways a, of the reversible sliding block B, provided with \I-shaped grooves 11 Z), central mortise, d, and grooves f f, and clamp-bar G, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. I11 a circular-saw guide, the combination,
with the centrally-mortised sliding block '18 pin m n, and clamping-bar G, of thecam-lever and bar 0, 0f the inwardly-curved adjustable H,"su-bstant-ially as herein shown, and for the guide-arms E E, provided with adjustable purpose described.
guides F F, substantially as herein shown and CLARENCE A. SHERMAN. 5 described. Witnesses:
4. In a circuiar-sawguide, the cqmbination, CHAS. A. LANE, with the bed-plafe 'Ag's'fiding U10ekB','b01t and M. F. PIERCE.
