Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 2, 1916. Serial No. 123,439.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. NEsBrr'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, -'county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Heel-Cutting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact, description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to heel cutting ap pa'ratus, and it may be said to. consist in the provision of the novel and advantageous features, and in the novel and improvedconstruction, arrangement, and combination of parts and devices as will be apparent from the description and claims which follow hereinafter. v a
The objects of this invention are to'provide a novel and improved adjustable heel holder, and to simplify and improve the construction which is disclosed in my Patent No. 1,170,178, dated February 1, 1916.
. Other objects and the advantages of the invention .will be apparent to those skilled in the, art from a careful consideration of the following description of the preferred form of the modified construction, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the modified heel cutting apparatus; Fig.2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevational view of a portion of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same; Fig. $3 is a rear end elevational view of the same Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3; Fig. 7 is an elevational view of the guide and post for the heel holder; Fig. 8 shows enlarged elevational and plan views of the sleeveto which the heel holder jaws are connected; Fig. 9 is a sectional view taken on the line 99 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 10. is a plan view of one of the heel holder jaws.
As seen in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings,
the shelf 11 has its. rear part secured to. the
support 12 by screws 13, and on said shelf 11 is movably mounted the platform 14 which has on its underside the dovetail guide 15 which is slidably fitted in a corresponding guideway in the shelf 11. On the platform 26 at the rear of-the support 12 is mounted the motor 27 which has fast on its shaft-28 the spur pinion 29 which meshes with the spur wheel 30 which is mounted fast on the shaft 22 to drive the latter and consequently the band saw 20.

A guide 31 having thereon 'thepost 32 is I adjustably mounted on the platform 14 and fitted in a dovetail guideway33 in the platform 14; saldguideway 33 extending substantlally at a right angle to the guideway for the guide 15 on the platform 14. -On
the post-32 is fitted the sleeve 34 which carries the jaws for holding or clam ping the heel 35 of the shoe 36. As shown the lower heel clamping jaw 37 is provided with an sleeve 34 and adapted to be locked in adjusted position by the setfscrew 39. The upper heel clamping jaw 40 is provided with an offset stub shaft 41 which is fitted in a bearing 42 on the sleeve 34. To the stub shaft 41 is connected theoperating lever 43 provided with the handle 44. Thejaws 37 and 40 are preferably provided with projecting parts 45 adaptedto fit in the crease annular offset 38 fitted adjustably 'on the 7 between the heel seat and the heel 35 of the 50 on its forward end and havingits other end connected to a'pivot 51 .on an extension 52 of the platform 14. The guide 31 can be locked in adjusted position by means of the latch 53 whichis mounted on a pivot 54 between ears 55 on the lever 47, and is adapted to fit in notches 56 which are provided on the extension52. A spring 57 is arranged to normally press the latch 53 into engagement with the notches 56.

l he operation and a vantages or the constructlon above described will be apparent The jaw 37 can be adj nsted on the sleeve 3% to suit the different sizcdheels, and the heel 35 can be easily and quickly placedand clamped by the jaws 37 and 4L0 because the lever l3 is offset and spaced from the jaws 37 and 4&0 sufficiently to be out of the way and permit a clear view in placing the heel to be clamped by the jaws. When the heel 35 is gripped by the jaws 37 and 40, the lever 47 can be operated to move the guide 31 according to the amount that is to be cut off of the heel 35. Thenby'operating the foot lever 58 or the handle 65 the platform 14: is operated and thereby moved to have the cutter or band saw 20 cut the heel 35. When it is desired to make a straight out of the heel 35 the lever {l3 and consequently the sleeve 3i are moved to have the jaws 37 and so, which are disposed in substantially the same vertical plane, disposed parallel to the band saw 20 before the cut is made. When it is desired to make an angular cut of the heel 35 the lever l3 and consequently the sleeve 34 are turned until the jaws 37 and 40 are turned to have the jaws make the desired angle to the cutter or band saw 20. After adjusting the jaws 37 and 40 according to the cut to be made in the heel 35, the sleeve 34 is locked in position on the post 32 by the locknut 46.
The construction which has been particularly illustrated and described admits of changes and modifications, wherefore the right is reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a movably mounted platform, a
guide adj ustably mounted on the platform, a post on said guide, a sleeve fitted on said post, and heel clamping jaws carried by said sleeve.
2. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a movably mounted platform, an adjustable guide mounted on the platform, a post on said guide, a sleeve fitted on said post and provided with a bearing, a heel clamping jaw having an offset portion connected to said sleeve, a lever provided with a stub shaft mounted in said bearing, and a heel clamping jaw connected to said stub shaft. 7

In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a movably mounted platform, a guide mounted on'and movable transversely to said platform, a post on said guide, a sleeve pivotally mounted on said post and provided with a bearing, a clamping jaw provided with an ofi'set portion adjustably connected to said sleeve, a lever provided with a stub shaft fitted insaid bearing, a heel clamping jaw connected to said stub shaft, and means on said post for locking the sleeve in adjusted position.
