T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. NEsBrrT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los A11- geles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Heel-Cutting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to heel cutting apparatus; and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel and advantageous features and in the novel and improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts as will be apparent from the description and claims which follow hereinafter.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved heel cutting apparatus in which the cutter is arranged horizon tally, and the heel holding device is carried by an arm which is arranged on a mounting so that said arm can be turned vertically and horizontally to adjust the heel for a straight or angular cut and to move the heel against the cutter.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved heel cutting device consisting of a comparatively thin circular saw and rollers arranged to bear against and prevent deflection of the marginal portion of the circular saw so that the circular saw will make an even straight out through the heel and will not be deflected away from the intact portion thereof.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a novel and improved heel cutting apparatus which is simple and compact in construction; economical to make, install, and use; easy and convenient to operate; and generally effective and practical for its purpose.
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a areful consideration of the following description of the preferred construction embodying the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a partly broken side elevational view showing the novel and improved heel cutting apparatus; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the same; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a broken sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4, and show"- ing the mounting of the arm on the screw; Fig. 6 is a broken sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 4, and showing the eX- tension of the yoke mounted on the bracket; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged broken sectional View taken on the line 77 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the bracket or frame 10 has on its underside the stem 11' whereby it can be secured by the set screw 12 to the pedestal 13 or other suitable support.
The horizontally arranged circular saw 14 is mounted fast on the vertical shaft 15 which latter is mounted in the bearings 16 provided on the bracket 10. The shaft 15 can be driven by means of the bevel pinion 17 which is secured tothe shaft 15 and meshes with the bevel pinion 18 which latter is secured to the driving shaft 19 which is mounted in the bearings 20 on the bracket 10.
On the forward part of the yoke 21 is mounted the substantially vertical screw 22 which has at its upper end the hand-wheel 23 for turning it. An extension 24 of the yoke 21 has its rear part pivotally mounted on the bracket 10 and provided with the offset projection 25 which latter is provided with the arcuate slot 26 through which passes the pin 27 which is secured to the bracket 10 and adapted to hold said projection in close frictional contact with said bracket 10. On the screw 22 is mounted the follower 28 on which is pivotally mounted the split end part of the arm 29 which lat ter has at its other end the operating handle 30 and carries the shoe holding device 31. The screw 32 which is mounted on the bracket 10 serves as an adjustable stop to limit the rearward movement 5' the arm 29.
The shoe holding device 31 in this instance consists of the jaws 33 and 34 which as shown are provided with curved beveled edge portions 33' and 34 which are adapted to fit in the crease between the heel seat and the heel 35 of the shoe 36. The jaw 33 is stationarily mounted on the top of the arm 29, and the jaw 34 is pivotally mounted on the top of said arm 29 and provided with the handle 37 which latter is pressed by the spring 38 to normally hold the jaw 34 away from the jaw 33.
The circular saw 14 is preferably of the type commonly used for sawing metal, and
it is preferably comparatively thin so that it will work with best results in cutting the leather and nails of the heel 35. lVhen using the comparatively thin circular saw 1% it will usually not make a straight cut through the heel 35 on account of the cutting edge of the saw being deflected away from the intact part of the heel 35 when a slice is cut off of said heel 35. Deflection of the cutting edge of the saw 14: is prevented by the rollers 39 and 39 which are adapted to hold the cutting edge of the saw 14 against the intact part of the heel so that a straight cut is made by said saw 14. The rollers 39 and 39 are preferably rotatably mounted on the bifurcated lower parts of adjustable fingers i0 which have their upper parts held by set screws 41 in openings in the offsets 42 of standards 43. The latter are preferably arranged on the horizontally disposed plate ist which has an extension 45 secured by bolts 6 to the bracket 10. The plate at is adapted to serve as a shield or guard for the circular saw 1%, and it is provided with a cut away portion 4L7 be tween the rollers 39 and 39 so that it does not obstruct movement of the heel 35 against the circular saw 14.
From the foregoing description, the construction, manner of use, and advantages of the improved heel cutting apparatus will be understood by those skilled in the art. It will be seen that when the heel 35 is placed between the jaws 33 and 3st of the shoe holding device 31, the latter can be raised or lowered to adjust the heel 35 relatively to the circular saw lat according to'the amount that it is desired to cut 0d of the heel 35; and then the arm 29 can be swung rearwardly to move the heel 35 against the cir cular saw let to out said heel 35. Then it is desired to make an angular cut through the heel the arm :29 can be raised or lowered to turn the yoke 21 until the heel 35 is atthe desired angle to the circular saw 14:.
The construction which has been particularly illustrated and described admits of changes and modificationswherefore the right is reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. Heel cutting apparatus cOmprising the combination of a bracket, a circular saw mounted on said bracket, a yoke pivotally connected to said bracket, a screw mounted on said yoke, a follower on said screw, an arm pivotally connected to said follower, and a shoe holding device carried by said arm.
2. Heel cutting apparatus comprising the combination of a bracket, a horizontally arranged circular saw mounted a on said bracket, a yoke having its rear part pivotally connected to said bracket and having an offset provided with an arcuate slot, a pin connected to the bracket and passing through said slot, a screw mounted on said yoke, a follower on said screw, an arm pivotally connected to said follower, and a shoe holding device carried by said arm.
3. Heel cutting apparatus comprising the combination of a bracket, a comparatively thin circular saw mounted on said bracket, a yoke connected to said bracket, a screw mounted on said yoke, a follower on said screw, an arm pivotally connected to said follower, a shoe holding device carried b said arm, adjustable fingers carriedby said bracket, and rollers on said fingers arranged to contact with and prevent deflection of the cutting edge portion of the circular saw substantially as set forth.
4. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a bracket, a comparatively thin circular saw mounted on said bracket, adjustable fingers carried by said bracket, rollers mounted on said fingers and contacting with one side of the saw adjacent the cutting edge, and shoe holding means disposed to press a heel against said saw with the heel seat upon the side opposite said rollers.
