Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. NEsBI'r'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Feeding-Mechanism Gearing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to heel cutting apparatus, more particularly to novel and improved means for operating the platform which carries the heel clamping and adjusting devices, and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel and advantageous features and in the novel and improved con struction, arrangement, and combination of parts as will be apparent from the description and claims which follow.
One object of the invention is to provide novel and improved means for operating the platform that carries the heel clamping and adjusting devices, so that the platform is moved mechanically with a minimum amount of manual labor or attention on the part of the operator.
Further objects of the invention are to provide novel and improved means of the nature specified-which is simple in construction, easy and convenient to use, and effective in action.
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in theart from a careful consideration of the following description of the preferred form of the construction embodying it, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a partly broken front elevational view of the heel cutting apparatus; Fig. 2 is a view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing the improved means for operating the platform which carries the heel clamping and adjusting devices; Fig. 3 is a view in which some of the parts shown in Fig. 2 are omitted and others are changed in position; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the platform and associated parts, taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a crosssectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is a crosssectional vieW taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 2; Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 88 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 9 is an enlarged broken plan view of the shelf.
The frame of the apparatus consists of the base portion 10 above which extends the bowed portion 11 having on the top thereof the post 12. The base portion 10 has thereon the bearing 13 for the drive shaft 14 which has fast thereon the pulley 15 over which and the pulley 16 fast on the shaft 17 is mounted the band saw 18. The latter passes through the guide 19, and between the adjustable guide bars 20. A guard plate 21 is mounted on an arm 22 and is disposed adjacent to the band saw 18. The base portion 10 has thereon a platform 23 for the electric motor 24 the shaft 25 of which has fast thereon the sprocket pinion 26 over which and the sprocket wheel 27 fast on the drive shaft 14 is fitted the sprocket chain 28.
The shelf 29 is provided with the longitudinal slot 30 and is secured to the lower end of the bowed portion 11 of the frame by the cap screw 31 which passes through the downwardly extending flange 32 on the rear part of the shelf 29. On the latter is mounted the platform 33. The latter and the shelf 29 are provided withrace-ways 34. in which are disposed the balls 35 for facilitating the movement of the platform on the shelf. Plates 36 provided with offset flanges 37 are mounted on the sides of the shelf 29 and adapted to guide the platform 33 in its movement on the shelf 29. On the platform 33 is mounted the transversely movable table 38 which has on its underside the dovetail guide 39 which is slidably fitted in a corresponding guideway 40 in the upper part of the platform 33. On a pivot 41 on the upper part of the table 38 is mounted the plate 42 which is adjustable angularly to the band saw or cutter 18 and carries the device 45 for clamping the heel 43 of a shoe 44. The means for adjusting and operating the table 38, the plate 42, and the heel clamping devices 45, as shown in the drawings are substantially the same as those set forth in detail in my application for patent filed Dec. 18, 1915, Ser. No. 67935 wherefore a detailed description thereof is omitted since they may be varied without affecting the invention in this case.
The improved means for operating the platform 33 will now be described. In the bearing lugs 46 mounted on the underside of the shelf 29 is journaled the threaded spindle 47 which has fast thereon the pulley 48 over which and the pulley 19 fast on the drive shaft 1 1- passes the belt 50. A follower 51 has its lower end grooved to fit 7 on the upper part of the threaded spindle 47, and it is provided with an upwardly extending stem 52 which fits freely in the socket member which latter passes freely through the slot 30 and is suitably secured to the platform 33. A retracting spring 54 is connected between the follower 51 and a stationary part 55 at the front of the shelf 29, and a spring 56 in the socket member 53 presses against the upper end of the stem 52. A shaft 57 is mounted on the bearing lugs 46 and it has suitably sccnret thereto the plate 58 which extends into a groove 59 in the follower 51. Between the lower parts of the stationary part and the adjacent bearing lug 46 is disposed the pivot rod 60 on which are pivotally mounted the ears 61 of the plate 62 which is pro vided with the curved projections 63 and (A at its upper end. A spring 65 is arranged to press against the lower part of the plate 62, and a spring (36 may be arranged to press against the plate 58. A lever G7 is mounted fast on the shaft 57 and has at one end the operating thumb-plate 68 and has at its other end a shoulder 69 to engage the end portion of the curved projection A lever 70 is mounted on the pivot 71 between the cats 72 on the underside of the shelf and is normally pressed downwardly by a suitable spring 73. The lever 70 is provided at one end with the operating handle 74, and it has its other end bearing against the curved projection 6. The threaded spindle 47 has thereon the cam 75 adapted to raise the follower 51 away from the threaded spindle 47 so that the spring can act to return the platform 33 to its forward position.
From the foregoing it will be understood that when the handle 74, of the lever 70 is pressed downwardly the other end of the lever 70 moves upwardly against the curved projection 64 and moves the plate 62- against the action of the spring 65which presses against the lower part of the plate 62 sufficiently to move the shoulder 69 out of engagement with the curved projection 63 to unlock the lever 67 and consequently the shaft 57 so that the follower 51 is moved downwardly against the threaded spindle 47. The latter being in rotation causes rearward movement of the follower 51 and consequently of the platform 33 until the cam 75 is reached whereupon the follower is raised away from the threaded spindle 47 and the spring 54 acts to return the platform 33 to its forward position. then the cam 75 raises the follower 51, the plate 58 and shaft 57 are moved by the follower 51 and consequently the lever 67 is moved to have the shoulder 69 engage the curved projection 63. After the handle 71; has been moved down to unlock the lever (57 and the shaft 57 to have the follower 51 move to operative contact with the threaded spindle 47, if it is found necessary to change the adjustment of any of the parts mounted on the platform 33 the thumb-plate (38 can be pressed down to move the other end of the lever 67 upwardly against the curved projection 63 and at the same time move the shaft 57 and plate 58 to raise the follower 51 and have the spring 51 act to return the platform 33 to the forward position.
I claim:
1. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a shelf provided with a slot, a pl atform movably mounted on the shelf, a driving-shaft, a threaded spindle operatively connected to the driving-shaft, a socket member secured to the platform and passing through said slot, a spring-pressed follower having at one end a stem freely fitted in said socket and having its other end grooved to fit on the top part of the spindle, said follower having a groove therein, a shaft, a plate secured. to said shaft and extending into said groove, a lever for moving said shaft to move the plate to raise the follower, means for locking the lever when the follower is in the raised position, means for releasing said lever to permit the follower to move to operative contact with the threaded spindle, a cam on the threaded spindle to raise the follower out of contact with the threaded spindle, and a spring for returning the platform to its forward position when the follower is moved away from the thread ed spindle.
2. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a shelf, a platform movably mounted thereon and provided with a socket, a driving-shaft, a threaded spindle 0peratively connected to the driving-shaft, a follower fitted freely in said socket and adapted to fit against the top part of the threaded spindle, said follower provided with a groove, a shaft, a spring-pressed plate socured to said shaft and extending into said groove, a lever for moving said shaft to move the plate to raise the follower away from the threaded spindle, a part with which the lever engages to look said lever when the follower is in the raised position, and means for releasing said lever to permit movement of said shaft and plate to move the follower to operative contact with the threaded spindle.
3. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a movably mounted platform provided with a socket, a threaded spindle, a follower fitted freely in the socket and adapted to fit against the threaded spindle, said follower having a groove therein, a shaft, a. spring-pressed plate secured to said shaft and extending into said groove, and a lever for moving said shaft to move the plate to move the follower away from the threaded spindle.
4. ln heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a movably mounted platform provided with a socket, a threaded spindle, a follower fitted freely in the socket and adapted to fit against the threaded spindle, said follower being provided with a groove, a shaft, a spring-pressed plate secured to said shaft and extending into said groove, a lever for moving said shaft to move the plate to move the follower away from the threaded spindle, a pivotally mounted spring-pressed plate having a part thereon with which the lever engages to lock said lever when the follower is moved away from the threaded spindle, and a lever for moving said pivotally mounted spring-pressed plate to unlock the first-mentioned lever to permit movement of said shaft and the plate thereon to move said follower against the threaded spindle.
5. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a movably mounted platform provided with a socket, a threaded spindle, a spring-pressed follower fitted freely in the socket and adapted to fit against the threaded spindle, said follower having a groove 1 therein, a shaft, :1 plate secured to said shaft and extending into said groove, a lever for moving said shaft to move the plate to move the follower away from the threaded spindle,
M means for looking the lever when the follower is moved away from the threaded spindle,
and means for unlocking said lever to permit the follower to move to position against the threaded spindle.
6. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a shelf provided with a slot, a platform movably mounted on the shelf, a threaded spindle, a socket member secured to the platform and passing through said slot, a spring-pressed follower fitted freely in said socket and adapted to fit against the threaded spindle, said follower having a groove therein, a shaft, a plate secured to said shaft and extending into said groove, a lever for moving said shaft to move the plate to move the follower away from the threaded spindle, a pivotally mounted spring-pressed plate having a part thereon with which said lever engages to lock it when the follower is moved away from the threaded spindle, a lever for moving said spring-pressed plate to unlock the first mentioned lever to permit movement of said shaft and the plate thereon to move said follower against the threaded spindle, a cam on the threaded spindle to move the follower away from the threaded spindle, and a spring for returning the platform to its forward position when the follower is moved away from the threaded spindle.
