To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that T, ROBERT H. Pacer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Clay and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful T nprovements in Grate Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to grates and more especially to a grate attachment in the form of a swinging and movable shelf which is adapted to be secured to the grate and in front of the fire box or basket or immediately over the same for heating sad irons, toasting bread or for analogous purposes. t I

The primary object of the invention is to provide a shelf attachment for grates which may be attached to or removed from an ordinary form of grate wherein the attaching member provides a support for a shelf, of a skeleton formation, to retain the same horizontally in front of the grate or directly over the fire box, as may be desired.

Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the invention is more fully understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which there is illustrated a simple and satisfactory reduction of the improvement to practice, and in which,

Referring now to the drawing in detail the numeral 1 designates the front upper bar of a grate of an ordinary or well-known construction.

The shelf is indicated by the numeral 2, and as illustrated in the drawing, is of skeleton formation so that the units of heat may readily pass through the same when the shelf is employed for heating vessels or the like, and when swung over the fire box of the grate, as shown in Fig. 3. has one of its edges longitudinally straight, and this edge is formed with a central substantially rectangular depressed portion 3, the end walls of the same extending laterally from the said straight edge, providing lugs et1. The opposite faces of the lugs are flush with the opposite faces of the shelf, and the said lugs are provided with openings for the reception of a pintle 5 whereby the spaced ears (36 provided upon a clamping member 7 are hingedly connected with the shelf. The clamping member 7 includes a flat head portion 9 which is of a width sufiicient to be contacted by either of the faces of the shelf 2, in accordance with the position in which the said shelf is swung to hold the shelf horizontal with respect to the bar 1 upon which the clamp is positioned and held in the manner now to be described.

The clamp, at one of its endsis provided with two spaced depending resilient fingers 1010 the same being arranged at the outer edges of the said end, the said fingers preferably tapered from their connection with the body of the clamp to the ends of the said fingers. The body is provided with a resil- 11 which is disposed centrally between the fingers 10 and the distance between the fingers 10 and 11 is sufficient to permit of the said fingers engaging with the opposite edges of the upper bar 1 of the grate and to hold a shelf effectively upon the said bar of the grate.

The head of the clamping member, outward of the finger 11 is formed with a downturned lip 12, and the distance between the lip 12 and the finger 11 may be greater or less than the distance between the said finger 11 and the fingers 10, so that the clamp may engage with the grate bars of varying thicknesses. In allinstances, it is to be understood that the finger 10 is sufficiently yieldable to permit of the same resiliently engaging with the grate bar to tightly clamp the grate bar between the finger 11 and the lip 12, or finger 11 and fingers 10.

From the above description taken in connection with the drawing the advantages of the device, the method of application as well as the operation of the same will, it is thought be fully understood by those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain without further detailed description.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is The herein described construction of shelves and means for attaching the same to the bar of a grate, comprising a flat shelf having a central depression in one of its longitudinal edges, and lugs extending outwardly from the said edge in a line with the side edges provided by the depression, a pintle journaled in the lugs and arranged approximately in a line with the referred to edge of the shelf, a clamp including a flat head portion having ears connected with the pintle to hingedly secure the clamp to the shelf said head being of a size to contact with and support the shelf when the said shelf is swung over the grate and over the fire box and when the said shelf is swung outwardly of the grate and to sustain the said shelf'horizontally in either of such positions, said clalnp having depending spring fingers to engage with the opposite sides of the grate bar, one of said fingers being arranged centrally of the clamp, the other fingers bein arranged in a line with one of the longitu inal edges of the clamp and the other longitudinal edge of said clamp being formed with a downturned lip which, in connection with the central finger, is adapted to engage with the grate bar of a different size from that engaged by the center and outer fingers.
