IMROVEMENT IN COMBINED LOUNGE AND BEDSTEAD.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,270, dated October 24, 1871.

To all wle-nm it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN C. HALL, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, hio, have invented anew and useful Convertible Lounge und Bedstead, of which the following is aspecification:

The present invention is an improvement on the convertible lounge und bed patented to me the 21st dey of February, 1871; and my seid invention consists in the provision of hinged side' boards, which, When the piece of furniture is designed for use :is abed, may be mede to assume a vertical position, so as to confine the bedding as etliciently ns in the Ordinary fixed bedsteed; und which side-boards, when not thus required, become instrumental, in conjunction with e. suit-- able strap and buckle, or their equivalent, to hold the hed-clothes snugly to the rear side ofthe back, when the latter is to assume its vertical position, as for the lounge.

Hinged to the side rails ofthe back G, one to euch rail, are side-boards K K', capable of heilig folded inward upon seid buck., us in Fig. 1, or ot standing erect, :is in Fig. 2, the said boards being so hinged to the rfi-ils as to open no further then the vertical position. A strep, L, and buckle M serve to hold the said boards to their folded position when the article is to be used es a. lonn ge, and also serve to hold the bed-clothes in place. In their vertical position the side-boards a-iord an elfeotuel casing, within which the bed-clothes may be tucked as ei'ectuelly as in a. common permanent bedsteztd. Buttons N N', pivoted to the rear side of the beck and entering mortises O O' in the head and foot-boards of the frame, serve to hold the back securely to its horizontal position. I do not, however, propose to conne myself to such buttons, but muy use lugs, snep-bolts, or other suite-ble fastening. Drawers P, sliding under the frame, may serve as receptacles for eX- tra bed-clothes, chamber utensils, Sec. The sideboztrds may consist of open frame-Work, if preferred. Small casters S, applied to the lower edge ofthe heck, may serve to support the seme in its vertical position.
