PORTABLE LAMP.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 23, I9I5.
Patented Oct. 24, 1916.
HENRY T. SPEBRY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A-SSIGNOR '10 WATERBURY MFG. 00., 0F WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
PORTABLE LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 24, 191 6.
Application filed April 23, 1915. Serial No. 23,276.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. SPERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a side view partly in section of a portable lamp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a face view of the reflector with the locking nut in place. Fig. 3 a side view of the locking nut detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in portable lamps particularly such as are commonly known as cap or miners lamps, and especially to acetylene gas lamps for this purpose. These lamps include a reflector; and the object of this invention is to provide means for securely connecting a reflector with the lamp, and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ an acetylene lamp comprising the usual water chamber 2 and carbid chamber 3 from which gas passes to aburner tube 4 into which is inserted a usual lava tip 5, this tube projecting through one side of the water chamber 2. The usual reflector 6 is provided, surrounding the burner tube, and at the rear of the reflector is a collar 7 the inner end of which is cut to fit the curvature of the water chamber 2 while the outer end has an opening. In the center of the reflector is an opening the edge of which is interlocked with the edge of the opening in the collar.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Patents,
The opening in the reflector is larger than the diameter of the gas tube 4, and the outer end of this tube is externally threaded to receive a nut 8 which has a flange 9, and the length of the nut is such that when screwed onto the tube 4 the flange will bear against the reflector 6 so as to crowd the sleeve into close engagement with the water chamber 2 or case of the lamp. The outer end of this nut is formed with notches 10 by which it may be conveniently turned into place, and the outer end of this nut projects beyond the burner tip 5 so as to not only formmeans for attaching the reflector to the lamp but also acts as a protector for the burner. Preferably and as shown the reflector will be provided with a lighting device 11, and my invention is particularly desirable in lamps having such lighting means as the use of such lighting means imposes more or less strain upon the reflector. By thus connecting the reflector with the lamp, it is rigidly held in place and assembled with the greatest ease.
I claim A portable lamp comprising a casing, a gas tube projecting through one side of the casing, said tube threaded at its outer end, a burner tip within said tube, a reflector having a central opening in line with said burner, a collar connected to the rear of the reflector and extending into contact with the casing, a nut extending through said opening and engaging with the outer end of said gas tube, said nut projecting outward beyond the said burner tip and formed with a flange adapted to bear against the front face of the reflector whereby the reflector is firmly connected with the lamp.
HENRY T. SPERRY.
