Description

G. WILLIAMS.
VEHICLE LAMP.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 10. 1917.
Patnted July-24, 191?.
ITEM
GORDON WILLIAMS, OF MOUNT CARMEL, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE ENGLISH & MERSICK 00., OF NE /V HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
VEHICLE-LAMP.
JlJZSdJiIS.
Application filed March 10, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GORDON IVILLrAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Carmel, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vehicle- Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure l a side view, partly in section, of
a vehicle lamp constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a top or plan view of the same, with the cap removed and the yoke turned down to give clearance for the lamp socket.
Fig. 3 a perspective view of the lamp carrier, detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in vehicle lamps, and particularly to electric lamps such as are used on automobiles having special reference to automobiles of a high grade. In electric lamps for automobiles the only occasion for opening the lampbody is to replace the lamp bulbs, which is not generally frequently required.
The object of this invention is to provide for easy access to an electric lamp so that it may be replaced as occasion may require, and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a lamp-body 2 which may be of any approved design, herein shown as rectangular in crosssection, with a wall 3 in the head 4L of the lamp to which wall a cup-shaped lamp-carrier 5 is secured by screws 6 or otherwise. This lamp-carrier is formed with a central opening 7 surrounded by an upwardly extended neck 8 formed on opposite sides with outwardly extending trunnions 9 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear, this neck being threaded to receive an electric lamp socket 10 in which the usual electric lamp bulb 11 is mounted, electrical connection with the lamp being made in the usual manner, one wire 12 being entered into the top of the lamp socket the wire passing through clearance notches formed for it in the walls of the lamp carrier. Connected with the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24L, 191?. Serial No. 153,972.
trunnions 9 is a yoke 13 curved so that when turned down it will clear the neck 8, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This yoke is formed with a threaded stem 1 1 over which the cap 15 of the lamp is passed, and turned onto this threaded stem 14 is a knob 16 completing the design of the lamp and holding the cap 15 in place. When it is desired to install or replace a lamp, it is only necessary to unscrew the knob or button 16, remove the cap 15 and turn the yoke 13 down, as shown in Fig. 2. The end of the wire 12 is then slipped out of the lamp socket and the socket unscrewed from the lamp-carrier, and a bulb turned into place. The lamp socket is then inserted in the lamp carrier, the wire 12 replaced, the cap 15 set over the stem of the yoke 13 and the knob 16 replaced and turned down so as to firmly hold the cap in place. I thus provide for convenient access to the lamp without pro viding the lamp-body with side doors.
I claim 1. A vehicle lamp comprising a lamp body provided at its upper end with walls, a lamp carrier connected with said walls, said lamp carrier formed with a central opening and an upwardly extended neck, a yoke connected with said neck, said yoke formed with a screw-threaded stem, a cap closing the upper end of the lamp-body through which cap the stem extends, and a knob applied to the said stem.
2. A vehicle lamp comprising a lampbody formed in its upper end with walls, a lamp carrier connected with said walls, said lamp carrier formed with a central opening, and an upwardly extended neck around said opening, said neck formed on opposite sides with outwardly extending trunnions, a yoke the ends of which are connected with said trunnions, said yoke formedwith a screwthreaded stem, a cap adapted to close the upper end of the lamp and formed with an opening through which the stem extends, and a knob applied to the upper end of said stem.
3. A vehicle lamp comprising a lampbody provided in its upper end with walls, a lamp carrier connected with said walls, said lamp carrier formed with a centrally arranged opening and with an upwardly extending collar around said opening, said collar formed with internal threads and on In testimony whereof, I have signed this specificatlon 1n the presence of two'su'bscrih WILL H. BITTER, WV. A. EVANS.
opposite sides with outwardly projecting trunnions, a lamp socket threaded into the said neck, a yoke connected with said trunnions and formed with a threaded stem, a cap closing the upper end of said lamp casing through which cap the said stem extends, and a knob applied to said stem.
