Application filed August 8,
mucsisr,
to improve upon devices of this character by simplifying the construction of the same, with especial reference to the manner of attaching the shade to the casing of the socket. I accomplish this by providing the mouth of the socket casing with a screw thread to receive a shade having a collar or extension with a corresponding thread to that of the mouth of the socket whereby the shade may be secured to the socket by y screwing it thereto. In one of the IOU s which my invention may take, the collar or extension is adapted to engage beneata the porcelain base and act as a means for retaining the base in position in the socket.
In the tollowi description, I have deso scribed, with rence to the accompanying drawings, two terms in which my invention may be embodied; but it is to be 1 that the invention may be cmother devices than those shown i, without exceedin the scope "efined in the appended claims. In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevartly in section. illustrating my in as applied to a two-piece lamp l is a side elevation, partly ustrating the application of to a lamp socket of the kind e in one piece.
I, 10 indicates the ot' a, two-piece i2 1 socket, which be at any the numerous well 2 sin": it) rries an iniing base,
.he ordi. y istruction, which has sethereto a threaded lan'ip-terininal-rcing contact 11, an insulating sleeve 12 serted between the contact 11 and iiig It), isolate the casing from the 1 i, contact. The casing 10 is exsomewhat at its lower end, at 13,

and has an interior screw thread formed thereon, as by means of rolling or the like. The collar or extension 15 of the shade 1s is provided with an exterior screw thread which is adapted to be screwed into the expanded portion 13 of the casing 10 for the purpose of securing the shade to the lamp socket. It will be seen that this construction permits the shade to be attached to, and detached from, the lamp socket with great ease, and obviates the use of intermediate members, such as the galleries, shade holders and the like commonly used, for connecting the shade to the socket.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Fig. :2, '16 indicates a one-piece casing, into which the insulating base 17 must be inserted through the mouth thereof. The lower end of the casing 16 is formed with interior threads 18, which are adapted to be engaged by the corresponding threads of a collar 19 with which the shade is provided. In this embodiment of my invention, the collar or extension 19 of the shade is formed with an inwardly extending flange 20 which, when the collar or extension 19 of the shade is screwed into the casing 16, engages an annular shoulder 21 formed on the base 17 and thus supports the base in position within the casing. In this embodiment of my invention, therefore, the attachment of the shade to the socket, and the supporting of the base within the casing of the socket, are simultaneously efi'ected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an electric lamp supporting device,
the combination with a lamp socket having a casing, the lower end of which is screw threaded and provided with an insulating bushing surrounding the lamp contacts and arranged in the casing, of a shade having, integrally formed therewith a central collar extension provided with a screw thread engaging the thread of the casing, said shade being removable independently of the socket and said socket forming in itself a self-contained unitary device.
2. In an electric lamp supporting device, the combination with an electric lamp socket including a casing formed with an interior screw thread adjacent its mouth, and an in sulating base within the casing insertiblc through the mouth thereof and insulating the lamp contacts from the casing, said base being formed with a shoulder adjacent its lower end, of a shade having integrally formed therewitha central screw threaded collar screwing into "said casing, and having an inwardly extending flange engaging the shoulder on the base tomamtain said base in position in the casing, said socket and base, however, forming a self-containedunL tary device. In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. BERTRAM JAMES GRIGSBY. Witnesses:-
