To all whom it may concmm Be it known that 1, JOHN F. OC NNOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State'of Illinois," have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica- My invention relates to improvements 1n draft rigging for railway cars.
The object of my invention'is, to provide a draft rigging of efficient operation.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a draft rigging embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section, on line 2 2 of'Fig. 1, and showing the positionof the parts infull buff; Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 33 of Fig. 1.; Fig. l is a perspective view of the front follower; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the draft gear shell.
Referring to the drawings,-the numerals 66 indicate draft members, or parts of the carframe to which the draft rigging is applied; 7 a horizontally disposed draft yoke mounted between. the draft members. The draft yoke is a Ushaped member consisting of the limbs S8 and the rear connecting member 9. The limbs of the yoke are provided near their forward ends with the transverse slots 1010 for the passage of the coupler key 11. The said coupler key extends through the draw bar 12, only the rear end thereof being shown in the drawings. The ends of the key 11 are received through slots 1313'provided in the draft members. The slots 13 in the draft mem here are longitudinally extended to permit forward and rearward travel of the key. therein, and the slots 10 in the limbs of the draft yoke are rearwardly extended to permit the rearward travel of the key 11 therein upon rearward movement of the draw bar without bufiing strain upon the key. A draft'gear l-J: is mountedbetween the draft members, said draft gear having a shell 15, preferably a hollow cylinder in general form, and containing thefriction elements .16, consisting preferably of the friction shoes 1717 and the wedge 18, and spring elements 19, consisting preferably of an outer coil spring2O and an inner spring 21 nested therein, mounted within the shell. The springs are seated at their rear end against the preferably integral plate 22 closing the rear end of the shell, and at their forward ends against the friction shoes 17. A connecting bolt 23 has a head 24 at one end received in the rearwardly opening re cess 25 provided in the rear plate 22 of the shell, and a nut 26 at its forward end received in the recess 27 in the forward face of the wedge 18. At its rear end the shell is preferably provided with flanges 28 28 extended from the rear plate 22 to permit the better engagement of the rear end of the shell with the connecting member 9 of; the
On rearward movement of the draw bar, the coupler key '11 slides 'rearwardly in the slots 10 in the draft yoke, the rear end of the draw bar engages against the front face of the plate 33 of the front follower forcing the front follower rearwardly. The front follower through its engagement with the friction elements is resisted in its rearward movement by said friction elements and the spring elements within the shell, the shell being stopped against rearward movement plate 31 thereof against the front edges of the keys 38 and 39, that is, the keys 38 and 39 engage against the front edges of the slots 30-30 of the shell, and the keys are held in a stationary position in relation to the draft members. On forward movement of the draw bar, the coupler key 11 engages against the forward ends of the slots 10 in the limbs of the draft yoke, the draft yoke is drawn forwardly and gives forward movement to the shell, which slides forwardly between the keys 38 and 39, the compression resisting elements in the shell being stopped by their engagement against the plate 33 of the front follower, the front follower being held against forward movement through engagement of the stationary keys 38 and 39 against the. rear ends of the slots 37 in the upper and lower arms 35 and 36, respectively, of the front follower It will be understood that on rearward movement of the front follower the arms, thereof travel rearwardly in sliding engagement upon the keys 38 and 39.
I claim:
1. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with draft members having upper and lower keys mounted between the same, of a front follower, the front follower being provided with upper and lower slotted arms slidably engaging the keys.
2. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in
combination, draft members, upper and lower stationary keys between. the draft members, a draft gear slidingly mounted in reference to the keys, and ,a'front follower having upper and lower slotted arms slidably engaging the keys.
3. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in combination, draft members, upper lower stationary keys between the draft members, a draft gear slidingly mounted between said keys, and a front follower having and rearwardly extended arms insliding engagement with said keys.
4. Ina draft rigging for railway cars, in combination, draft members, upper and lower stationary keys between the draft members, a draft gear slidingly mounted be? tween said keys, afront follower having up per and lower slotted arms, the upper arms slidably engaging the upper key, and the lower arms slidingly engagingthe lower key. 5. combination, draft members, upper lower stationary keys between the draft members, a draft'yoke, and a draw bar connected to the yoke, a draft gear and a fol-' lower, the draft gear having a shell having upper and lower transverse grooves, thesta- .tionary keys passing through saidgrooves,
the shell having a sliding movement between said keys, the, draft yoke operatively connecting the shell to thedrawbar.
6. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in combination, draft members, upper and lower stationary keys between the draft gear shell having upper and lower outwardly opening slots to PQOGIVG thekeys.

10. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in combination, draft members, upper and lower keys mounted between the draft members, a draft gear slidingly mounted between said keys, a draft yoke, a draw bar connected to said yoke, and a front follower, the front follower being mounted within the draft yoke and having upper and lower arms slidably engaging the keys. v
11. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in combination, draft members, upper and lower keys mounted between the draft members, a draft gear slidingly mounted between said keys, a draft yoke, a draw bar connected to said yoke, and a front follower, the front follower being mounted within the draft yoke and having upper and lower arms slidslidable with respect to the keys and each other, the keys limiting the movement of the shell and follower in both directions.
13. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with draft members, of a pair of horizontally extending stationary keys mountedfbetween the draft members, a draft gear shell slidably mounted between the keys, and a front follower, the keys limiting the amount of movement ofrthe shell and the follower.
