IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS FOR HORSES HOOFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,906, dated October 10, 1871.
T o all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROMEYN WILLIAMS, of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an. Improved Boot for the Hoofs of Horses, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the combination of a belt of leather or other elastic material, (which may be out bias so as to fit the hoof,) and a steel band for keepin the latter in the proper degree of tightness on the hoof to obviate the difficulty which would otherwise arise by the swelling and shrinking of the belt as it becomes Wet or dry. The belt is provided with a strap and buckle, and when the boot is properly confined on the hoof the cracks already existing' tend to heal up When held together at a uniform tightness. The boot is prevented slipping on the hoof by means of a pin which fits in a hole or groove in the hoof, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a face view of the boot spread out. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, showing the pin G. Fig. 3 is an inside view when spread out. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the hoof with the boot in position. Fig. 5 is a like View of the hooil A, the boot being removed to show the hole a and groove a.

A is the hoof of a horse. B is the leather belt,
and 4, so as to iit the hoof when drawn around the same, as seen in Fig. 4, the ends of the belt being provided with straps C and C', the former of which has a buckle, D. The belt has, in coinbination, a steel band, E, which is fastened by means of the rivets F. rlhe band gives strength to the boot, to admit of its being drawn sufiiciently tight to close old cracks in the hoof and prevent the formation of new ones. It also keeps the boot of uniform tightness, or nearly so, whether wet or dry, and thus obviates the diiiiculty which would otherwise occur by the swelling and shrinking of the belt B. The band may be galvanized to prevent its oxidation. There is a pin, G, the outer end of which is riveted to the belt B and band E, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, which is placed in a hole, a, of the hoof A, or a groove, o', seen in Figs, to"1i)reventtl1e shifting of the boot. H is a pad or cushion connected with the belt B.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the belt B, of leather or other pliable material, provided with pad or pads H, inner projecting pin G, straps C C', and buckle D, and the steel band E encircling' the exterior ofthe strap B, all constructed substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
