MUFFLER FOR EXPLOSIVE MARINE ENGINES.
Application filed July 16, 1915.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, FRANCIONS A. Rnnon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clear-lake, in the county of Skagit, State of IVa-shington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mu'li'lers for Explosive Marine Engines; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in mul'llers and particularly to mufllers for explosive marine engines.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and novel exhaust mufller which is adapted to be applied to the side of a boat below the water line so as to discharge exhaust gases from the engine into the water and thus do away with the usual and unpleasant noise of the exhaust.
Another object is to provide a device of this character of such construction that the exhaust gases will have sufficient room in which to expand as they travel toward the discharge end of the mufller.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved mufl'ler, Fig. 2 is a top plan View, Fig. 3 is an end view, and Fig. t is a transverse section on the line l4: of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a triangular plate which is secured to the side of the boat 11. Formed on this plate and extending outwardly therefrom in relief is a semi-conical projection 12. Formed through the plate between the apexes of the plate and the pro- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept.,12, 1916.
Serial No. 40,309.
jection is a threaded opening 13 into which is screwed the exhaust pipe 1% from the en- Disposed over the projection and secured to the plate 10 is a semi-conical plate 15, the cavity of which is closed at the apex and opened at the base. IVhen this plate 15 is properly secured to the plate 10 there is formed a space between the projection 12 and the plate 15. charged the exhaust gases from the engine, and by reason of the fact that the device widens toward the outer or discharge end the gases have suliicient space in which to expand. The exhaust gases which escape from the open end of the muffler are discharged under the water, thereby deadening or completely removing the influence of the exhaust. Moreover, the escaping exhaust gases will, due to their momentum, flow out of the nozzle in a segmento frusto-conical sheet.
What is claimed is:
An under water exhaust muffler for a marine engine comprising a triangular plate adapted to be secured to the side of the boat, having a semi-conical projection formed in has-relief on the outer face thereof, said plate having an exhaust pipe receiving opening formed at a point between the apexcs of the projection and the plate, and a semiconical plate secured on to the first-named plate in position to provide a space between the projection and the last-named plate, said semi-conical plate having the apex end closed and the base end opened.
In testimony whereof, I allix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
