CHARLES E. WILLIAMS FREDERICK H. WEAVER, OE BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
MUFFLER FOR EXHAUST-PIPES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed June 16, 1915. Serial No. 34,365. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES E; WIL- LIAMS and FREDERICK H. WEAVER, citizens of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Muffiers for Exhaust-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mufliers for explosive engines, and has for its object to provide a muffler of simple construction and which may be readily secured in or removed from the exhaust pipe of any explosive engine, whereby the noise resulting from the exhaustof the engine, as well asth'e back pressure upon the engine, will be overcome.
forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 designates a cylindrical tube adapted to fit within the exhaust pipe 2, and is provided with a number of integral baffle plates 3 cut from the bottom thereof and bent inwardly and a c responding number of integral bafile plates 4: out from the top and bent inwardly, the plates 3 and 4: are slightly out of line vertically so that they overlap each other when bent inwardly, the cylindrical tube 1 is also provided with integral baffle plates 5 and 6 on opposite sides thereof which are bent inwardly and overlap in the same manner as the plates 3 and 1. The
baflle plates 5 and 6 being between the plates 3 and .4. All of the bafile plates are cut from the cylinder and are narrower at the point where they join the tube and after being out are forced into the tube 1 and then flattened out by a suitable tool, causing them to expand and become wider than the opening from which they were cut, whereby the said bafiie plates will be locked under the side edges of the said opening adjacent the point where they are bent. These bafiie plates cause the gases resulting from the expl osions of the engine to diffuse as they pass through the mufilerfthus causing them to be'discharged silently therefrom. The arrangement of the baflle plates causes a tortuous passage through the muffler but will not cause a back pressure of the gases passing therethrough. The muflier may be held by a bolt passing through the aperture 7 or in any other suitable manner.
Having thus described our invention what We claim is:
1. A mufiier for explosive engines comprising a cylindrical tube having a number of integral bafile plates bent inwardly therefrom, said plates being adapted to lock under the edge of the cylinder from which they were cut.
of integral baffle plates bent inwardly from the bottom thereof, a similar number of integral battle plates bent inwardly from the top thereof and having their ends overlapping the -ends of the upper baflle plates, a number of integral baffle plates bent inwardly from one side thereof, and a similar number of integral baflle plates bent inwardly from the other side thereof and having their ends overlapping the bafile plates on the opposite side.
8; A. mufll'er for explosive engines comprising a cylindrical tube having a number of integral baifle plates bent inwardly from the top and bottom thereof, the plates of the top being out of line vertically with, and having their ends overlap, the plates at the bottom, a number of integral baffle plates bent inwardly from the opposite sides thereof, the plates of one sidebeing out of line vertically with, and having their ends overlap, the plates of the opposite side.
41. A mufller for explosive engines comprising a cylindrical tube having a number. of integral bafiie plates bent inwardly from the top and bottom thereof and having their In testimony whereof we afiix our signaends overlapping each other, a number of in-' tures in presence of two witnesses.
tegral baifie plates bent from the E opposite sides thereof and. having their ends 5 overlapping each other a11 -of said bafiie FREDERICK W plates being flattened out causing them to Witnesses: I lock under the edge of the opening from CHAPIN A. FERGUSON, Whichthey were cut. JEAN JAYER.
