IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR COMPRESSING AER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,634, dated October 14, 1873; application filed August 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD S. PARDEE, of San Diego city and coimty, State of California, have invented a Hydropneumatic Engine; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suflicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it. most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device for utilizing the force derived from the waves of the sea, for the purpose of compressing air into a suitable receiver or reservoir, from which it may be led by pipes to any point where it may be needed, and which I call a hydropneumatic engine; and it consists principally in'the use of a large pressurechamber, having one open end, which lies in a direction to receive the force of the waves. At the other end are two passages, one of which contains a valve which opens to allow the egress of air upon the entering of the water, while the other contains a valve which opens to admit air to fill the pressure-chamber again upon the receding of the wave.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on a horizontal plane.
Ais a chamber, of large size and of suitable shape, having an open mouth at one end. This chamber is secured at some point where the surf beats heavily against an abrupt coast, its mouth opening as nearly in the direct line, to receive the waves, as is practicable. At the rear end of this chamber are two passages, the one, B, having a valve, 0, which opens outwardly, so as to permit a free escape of air as the waves rush into the chamber A. This passage is connected by suitable pipes with a reservoir, within which the compressed air is stored, and from which it may be conveyed to any point where it is needed for use. The passage D is provided with a valve, E, which opens inwardly, and this admits air to fill-the pressure-chamber as the waves recede, thus making the machine self-acting.
By this device I am enabled to utilize the power of the waves in a very simple and economical manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pressure-chamber A, provided with the two passages B and D, with their outwardly and inwardly opening valves 0 and E, the whole forming a hydropneumatic engine to be operated by the waves of the sea, substantially as herein described.
