GEORGE E. SMITH, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARBAGE-CAN-COFER-FASTENING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Can-Cover- Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to cover fasteners, and more particularly to the class of garbage can cover fastening devices.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character wherein the cover when placed upon the can or receptacle is automatically locked thereon so as to avoid the possibility of the cover becoming knocked off of the same by dogsor other animals, and thereby eliminating the spilling of the contents of the can or receptacle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character wherein the cover is as easily removed as an ordinary unfastened cover, and is also self-locking when replaced.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character wherein the cover when replaced upon the can or receptacle will be automatically locked thereon irrespective of the position of the cover. as it locks anywhere about the periphery of the can or receptacle, and in event of the upsetting and rolling of the can the cover will not become loose, and thereby avoid the dumping or discharge of the contents therefrom.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and eiiicient in use, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, c0mbination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing :Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of a garbage receptacle and cover showing the fastener constructed in accordance with the invention applied to the latter. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 38 of Fig.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 4, 1915.
Patented Sept. 5, 19t6.
Serial No. 43,638.
1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on .the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a portion of a garbage receptacle or can which is of the ordinary well-known construction, and B the removable cover therefor, which is formed at its periphery with the usual depending annular flange C which telescopes over an out-turned annular bead D at the open or mouth edge of the receptacle or can, the cover B being provided with a central loop handle E, as usual.
The fastener comprises a pair of diametrically opposed housings 5 which are made fast to the cover B at the periphery thereof and are located without the same. Within each housing 5 is a locking dog 6 swingingly supported upon a pivot 7 which is mounted in the side walls of the housing 5, and these dogs 6 in the respective housings 5 work through openings 8 formed in the peripheral flange C of the cover B for positive locking engagement with the bead D on the receptacle or can A for the fastening of the cover thereon.
Formed on the handle E at opposite sides of the same are spaced parallel guide Wings 9 which are arranged in pairs and have located therebetween the downturned lever ends 10 of an inverted substantially U- shaped resilient bail or frame 11, the middle portion between the lever ends 10 being downwardly arched or bowed and flattened to form a compressible spring 12 which coacts with the lever ends so as to rock the same at their fulcrum points 13 on the handle E between the wings 9 thereonfor a purpose presently described.
Loosely connected with the dog 6 are pull rods 14 which are also loosely connected to the lever ends 10 so that upon compressing the spring 12 of the bail or frame 11 the dogs will be rocked to released position for the freeing of the cover B on the receptacle or can A to permit the removal of the cover therefrom. \Vhen pressure is relieved from the spring 12 the same assumes its normal bowed shape so that the dog 6 will be in a position for the automatic locking engagement thereof with the bead D on the recepi can.
tacle or can A when the coveris replaced thereon for the positive locking of the cover upon the same.
Suitably fixed to the spring 12 of the bail or frame 11- is a plate-like hand hold or grip 15 which serves to permit a convenient grip of the handle E and for compressing the spring 12 of the bail or frame-11 for the release of the dogs 6 to permit the free removal of the cover from the receptacle or The cover B when placed upon the receptacle or can A is automatically locked by reason of the dogs 6 riding over the bead D and positively engaging therewith so that the cover will be firmly locked upon'the receptacle or can to avoid the knocking of the cover therefrom by a dog or other animal, and also in event that the can or receptacle is upset and rolled the cover will not become freed from the said receptacle orcan, and thereby retaining the contents therein.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
lVhat is claimed is 1. The combination with a receptacle hav-' housings and engageable with the bead on the receptacle, guide wings formed on the handle, an inverted substantially U-shaped resilient bail arranged within the handle and having its ends working between the wings, and connections between the ends of the bail and the said dogs for releasing the same from the receptacle on compressing the bail.
3. The combination of a receptacle having a beaded mouth edge, and a cover removably fitted thereon and having a handle, housings mounted on the cover at diametrically opposite points thereof, pivoted dogs in the housings and engageable with the bead on the receptacle, guide wings formed on the handle, an inverted substantially U-shaped resilient bail arranged Within the handle and having its ends working between the wings, connections between the ends of the bail and the said dogs for releasing the same from the receptacle on compressing the bail, and a plate-like grip carried by the bail for cooperation with the handle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
' GEORGE E. SMITH.
