FORGE APPLIANCE Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 25, 1915. Serial No. 17,020.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY FRALIGK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forge Appliances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to appliances adapted to be used with forges. 4
It is the object and purpose of the invention to provide an appliance which may wholly or partly surround the flrein a forge and through which air may be forced at a plurality of points around the lire in an upward direction so as to carry the heat upward into the chimney or hood of theforge and prevent the radiation thereof outwardly from the lire to thereby protect operators working near the forge.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character with various new and useful auxiliary improvements consisting in means for controlling the air supply; an attachment to the appliance whereby a twyer may be connected thereto together with means for controlling the supply of air to the attachment; and in various other new and useful improvements as will more fully appear hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved appliance used in connectionwith a forge. Fig 2 is a plan view of a preferred form of forging appliance. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, a part being broken away to disclose the construction. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken through the bed of the forge; and Fig. 5 is a modified construction showing another form of the appliance.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
In the embodiment showing the invention, a forge is indicated at 1, the bed thereof being formed in the usual manner and containing ire clay or similar material lL in the bed through which projects the usual twyer 2, the air being conveyed to the twyer through a pipe 3 supplied by any suitable blower such as indicated at 4. It is of course understood that the type of blower is not an essential part of the invention. The hood 5 of the forge is placed in usual position above the twyer 2.
Interposed in the length of pipe 3 is a branch 6 to which is connected a flexible conduit '7 preferably formed from rubber hose. My appliance is secured at the end of the conduit 7, it consisting of a tubular scction 8 terminating in a substantial circular tubular member 9. A plurality of openings 10 are'formed in the member 9 on the inner and upper surface thereof through which air entering said member may escape. A valve 11 is provided in the section 8 and may be operated to control the supply of air passing to the appliance. Similarly a valve 12 is interposed in the length of the pipe 3 to control the supply of air passing through the twyer 2. In the use of the appliance it is placed around the fire which is built above the twyer 2. When the heat from the fire becomes too great for comfort,"valve 11 may be turned to permit the passage of air through the openings 10. rIhe position of these openings is such that the normal flow of air therethrough is upward and slightly inward over the re carrying the head upward into the hood 5. In this manner no matter how large the fire may be one working near it will be protected from the heat.
Various modifications in the construction may be resorted to. For instance, I have shown an extension 13 substantially in line with the section 8 of the appliance and provided with a controlling valve 14. To this extension a twyer may be attached if desired, and positioned in a plane below the appliance 9 and the air may be taken directly from the blower 4 through the flexible conduit 7 to said twyer. Similarly, valves 15 may be positioned one at either side of the extension 13, as shown in dotted lines, to shut off the air from the member 9 when desired or to permitthe entrance of air to either side thereof, a stop 16 being shown at a point diametrically opposed to the extension 13. By this modification in construction the air may be permitted to pass through only one side of the part 9 as in the case where the fire becomes larger at one side than at another. Furthermore in Fig. 5 I have shown the slight modification in which two tubular arms project in opposite directions from the section 8 and provided With'the openings 10 as shown. With this other so as to require protection for theV operator at the forge, the device may be placed in position at said side to afford the desired protection. As a means to hold the device in any position to which itis placed I have secured, by means of a clip 18, the conduit 7 to a block 19 which has considerable Weight andwhich When placedv on the forge bed will hold the appliance in place. With this construction it will be readily understoody f K that the excessive radiation of heat from a forgeffire is insured against and protection afforded to onetworkin'g .around the forge. By reason of the flexiblecharacter of the conduit 7 the appliance may be moved at will andmay at vtimesfbe removed romthe fire; For-instance, many times in trip hammer Worlrlit is desirable thatgthe scale coming from the forged metal be removed from the anvil as soon as itis freed from the metal Worked upon. With a construction of thiszcharacter and especially like that one ShOWnin'Fig. 5 the scale may be continuously bloWn away during the operation of the trip hammer. Various other uses will occur Y to those skilled in the art as Well as various modifications in structure. My invention, however, comprehends all these modifications in structure falling Within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim zl. An appliance for use with -forges comprising a tubular section, a controlling valve in said section, a flexible conduit connected at one end of the section, tubular devices extending in opposite directions from the other end of the said section, and provided on their inner upper surfaces with a plurality of openings, and a block connected to the flexible conduit adjacent said tubular devices, substantially as described.

An appliance for use in forges couiprising a tubular section, a controlling valve in said section, a flexible conduit connected Vat one end of the section, tubular devices extending in opposite directions from the other end of said section, controlling valves in each of said devices, a tubular extension projecting `forward from said devices substantially in alinement with said tubular section and a controlling valve inthe extension.
