UNITED STATES PATENT OFrIhE.
ERNEST BAUMGARTNER, OF FAIRVIEW, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR'PROMOTING -A ND CONTRDLLING COMBUSTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,635, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed January 7, 1902. Serial No- 88,730. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST BAUMGARTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairview, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Promoting and Controlling Combustion andI do hereby declare the'following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for promoting and controlling combustion, and is designed to operate as a portion of a stovepipe-flue, and has for its object the supplying of a limited amount of air to the top of the fuel in theastove after all of the ordinary draft-openings of the stove are closed and operates to produce a downward current of air in the back part of the flue and an upward current of the products of combustion in the front and central part of the flue. The mechanism by means of which I accomplish these results is hereinafter set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of a stovepipe or flue on the line or w in Fig. 3, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line y y in Fig. 8. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line 2 z in Fig. 2.
In the drawings illustrating my invention,
A is a section of a stovepipe or flue, in which,
above its junction with the stove, I secure a reduced section of flue B. This section B is provided with collars O G on its upper and lower ends, which closely fit the inside of the flue A, so as to leave an annular chamber D between the flues "Aand B and the collars O and O. In this chamber D, on the opposite sides thereof, I secure .vertical partitions cl d, which extend upward from the collar 0 nearly to the collar 0, and in the front of the flue A, I make an air-inlet openingE, which supplies air to said chamber D at one side of the partition (1 d therein, and in the collar G at the rear of the flue I make openings 0, so that air entering the opening E passes up around the reduced flue B and over the tops of the partitions d d and down on the opposite sides of said partitions and out through the holes 0 in the collar 0 and downward in a separate air-current along the back of the flue to the top of the fuel in'the stove, while the products of combustion pass upward,
through the front and central portions of the flue inthe usual manner. By means of this construction I am enabled to utilize the well known features of an up anddown draft in the same flue and utilize it to supply draftair to the top of the fuel ina stove, so as to promote a reduced and limited combustion of the fuel when all of the ordinary draftopenings of the stove areclosed.
Having thus described my invention, so as to enableothers to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- The combination of a stovepipe or flue, a reduced flue-section inserted therein, annular collars on the upper and lower ends of said reduced flue-section fitting the inside of the pipe or fine in which it is inserted, vertical partitions at each side of the reduced flue extending from the lower collar nearly to the upper collar thereon, an air-inlet opening or openings inthe front of the pipe or flue, communicating with the space between the reduced flue-section and the outer flue at one sideof said partitions, and an air-discharge opening or openings, through the lower collar at the rear of the flue, on the opposite side of said partitions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERNEST BAU'MGARTNER. Witnesses:
RALPH A. STURGEON, H. M. S'IURGEON.
