SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,480, dated January 5, 1897.

Be it known that I, PATRICK J. HANLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ainesbury, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dampers and Heat-Deflectors, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved damper and heat-regulator for smoke-conducting pipes of stoves, furnaces, and other heatgenerators, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a central longitudinal section showing the damper closed. Fig. 2 represents a similar longitudinal section showing the damper open. Fig. 3 represents a top plan View of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: represents a longitudinal section on the line 4 4 shown in Fig. 3.

A represents the smoke-pipe of a stove, f urnace, or other suitable heat generator, as usual. In the wall of said smoke-pipe is journaled the damper keybar B, preferably slightly curved, as shown, and provided at one end with a handle I) for turning and adj usting the position of the damper within the smoke-pipe as may be required. To the keybar B is secured a conical cup-shaped heatdeflector G, the upper side of which serves as a downward-draft-controlling device.
D is a central spindle secured in its upper end to the key-bar B and deflector O, as shown, and to the lower end of said spindle is secured a conical deflector E, similar to the one C at the upper end of the spindle D, as shown in the drawings. On the spindle -D is longitudinally movable and adjustable the centrallyperforated annular damper F, the outer edge of which fits loosely within the smoke-pipe A, as shown.

outer edge of the lower conical deflector E, as shown, so as to cause the smoke-pipe A to be closed when the annular damper F is lowered in contact with the'upper edge of the conical deflector E, as shown in Fig. l.
In practice I prefer to attach to the annular damper F a bail or cross-bar F, which is guided on the spindle D, as shown. Any suitable device may be employed for actuating the damper F, and in the drawings I have shown for this purpose a lever G, pivoted at its outer end at g to the key-bar B and loosely connected at its inner end to the bail or bar F, as shown. The lever G is provided beyond its fulcrum g with an extension or handle G, adapted to be operated by hand or suitably connected to an automatic device of any suitable or well-known construction, if so desired.
The operation is as follows: When the device is in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the heat is deflected by coming in contact with the lower deflector E, at the same time.
permitting the smoke and gases to pass upward through the central perforation in the annular damper F, and coming in contact with the deflector O a portion of the heat is deflected and the smoke and gases permitted freely to escape. The upper deflector 0 serves also to prevent a downward draft through the smoke-pipe A. By adjusting the damperplate F relative to the deflector E (or said defiector toward the said damper-plate F) the dam per-openin g may be more or less adjusted and entirely closed by bringing said deflector and damper-plate in close contact, as shown in Fig. 1. The damper may be fully opened by turning the bar B and its connecting parts one-fourth of a revolution.
\Vhat I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is- 1. In a damper a key-bar journaled in the smoke-pipe a central spindle secured to such bar and having a conical deflector 0 attached to its upper end combined with a lower de flector E and annular damper F one of said parts being adjustable to and from the other and means for adjusting such parts substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
