RESTRAINSNG DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED APR.24. 19|6.

has relation more particularly .panying FRED BOWER, OF CRAIG, COLORADO.
RESTRAINING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 1, 1916.
Application filed Apri124, 1916. Serial No. 93,226.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED Bowen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Craig, in the county of Molfat and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Restraining Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw- This invention relates to certain improvedevices for stock and to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with hogs or the like; and it is an object of the invention to provide a restraining device having novel and improved means whereby an animal may be conveniently and effectively held in a desired position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved restraining device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageousfor use, all as willbe hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to de-' scribe the same with reference to the accomdrawings, wherein is disclosed a view in perspective of a restraining device ments in restraining constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a table of predetermined dimensions and preferably rectangular in plan supported at its opposite ends by the legs 2, and 3 denotes side members having their lower longitudinal margins hingedly connected, as at 4:, with the longitudinal marginal portion of the upper face of the table 1. It is also to be notedthat adjacent ends of the sides 3 have their upper portions cut away, as at 5, which is of especial advantage in a castrating operation.
The upper or free longitudinal marginal portions of each of the sides 3 adjacent the opposite ends thereof are provided, as hereinv disclosed, with the openings 6 affording a means whereby a flexible member 7 may be secured to each of the said sides 3, the connection of a member 7 with one of the sides acting 3 being opposite to the connection between the second flexible member 7 and the second s1de3.
Each of the members 7 is loosely directed throughthe adjacent opening 6 of the 00- side 3 and terminates in the loop 8. The loop 8 of the flexible member 7 adjacent the ends of the sides 3 provided with the cutaway portions 5 is adapted to be engaged by the foot of an operator in order to impart the requisite strain thereon in order to maintain the hind legs of an animal immovable, it being understood that said flexible member 7 is adapted to be disposed thereover.
The forward or second flexible member 7 is adapted to be returned so that the loop 8 thereof may be engaged withthe pin 9 extending laterally from the lever 10 pivotally engaged with one of, the rear supporting legs 2 and provided with an inwardly disposed and laterally directed latch 11 adapted to coact with the rack 12 carried by the supporting leg 2 at the same side of the table 1 as the first named supporting leg hereinbefore referred to. It will be perceived that after an animal is properly positioned upon the table 1 and the loop 8 of the forward flexible member 7 engaged with the lateral extension or pin 9 of the lever 10, said lever 10 may be depressed sufficiently to effectively hold the animal upon the table 1.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a restraining device constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be olovious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
1. A restraining described comprising a table, sides pivotally engaged with the table and adapted'to swing upwardly, adjacent ends of the sides having their upper portions cut away, a flexible member connected to each of the sides and at device of the character terminating in a loop,
r at opposite ends thereof, each of said members terminating in a loop, and a lever pivotally engaged with the table and with which one of the loops is adapted to be detachably engaged, each of the flexible members being loosely directed through the second side.
3. A restraining device of the character described comprising a table, sides pivotally engaged with the table and adapted to swing upwardly, adjacent ends of the sides having their upper portions cut away, a flexible member connected to each of the sides and at opposite ends thereof, each of said members terminating in a loo-p, and a lever pivotally engaged with the table and with which one of the loops is adapted to be detachably engaged, the lever being arranged at the side of the table with which coacts the side having secured thereto the flexible member adapted for detachable engagement with the lever.
4. A restraining device of the character described comprising a table, sides pivotally engaged with the table and adapted to swing upwardly, a flexible member connected to each of the sides and at opposite ends thereof, each of said members terminating in a loop, the opposite ends of the sides being provided with openings, the flexible member secured to one side being threaded through the opening of the second side, said flexible members being of such a length as to be returned and disposed over the side to which it is directly connected, and a lever pivotally engaged with the table and with which one of the loops is adapted to be engaged.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED BOWER.
