IMPROVEMENT IN FRACTURE APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,073, dated August 24, 1875; application filed June 12,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON DANBY, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Support for Broken Legs, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of limb-supporters in which the limb is so suspended as to be free from the bed; and the object of my invention is to construct a support of this character, which will permit the limb to be turned with case. This object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved limb-snpport; Fig. 2, an end view, and Fig. 3 an inverted plan view.
A is a box-like frame, to which the broken limb is properly bound, and which consists of a base-piece, a, vertical end piece I), and side pieces at hinged to the base. To the end piece b is pivoted the arm B suspended from one end of bar D, to the opposite end of whichis attached the transverse bar E. To each end of this bar E is connected one end of the strap F, to the lower portion of which a grooved segment, G, is so adapted as to turn freely thereon. 0n the cross-bar D is a sliding block, H, which can be adjusted in any desired position, and secured after adjustment by a set-screw, h, a suspending cord or rope, X, being connected to the latter for a purpose described hereafter.
The strap F may be made of metal, leather, or other suitable material.
The broken leg is placed on a pillow or other soft material on the base of the box, the foot being bound to the end piece b by straps passed through the slots y. The hinged side pieces 01 are then bound up against the leg, to which any required pressure may be applied by bandages, &c. The leg thus confined within the box A is then elevated above the bed by means of the cord X, when it is at liberty to turn freely, as desired, the entire box A turning with the leg on the pivot :11: at one end, and in the segment G at the opposite end.
On account of the adjustability of the block H, the point at which the power is applied to the bar D, in order to raise the same, can be shifted to correspond with the point of fracture of the limb.
I claim as my invention 1. .A support for broken legs consisting of a suspended box, A, pivoted at one end, and provided at the opposite end with a segment, Gr, arrangedto turn on a strap, F, all as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the suspended box A with the bar or frame D, and the sliding block H, as and for the purpose described.
