Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1917.
Application filed September 27, 1916, Serial No. 122,525.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GILEAD H. STINGLEY and STEPHEN VAN Corr, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus Junction and Gone, in the county of Louisa and Muscatine, respectively, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in gates and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved gate comprising relatively movable sections arranged in imposed relation whereby sliding of the lower section afiords a passageway for small stock but prevents the passing of large stock while movement of the upper section provides a passageway for large stock but prevents the passing of small stock.
The invent-ion consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved gate whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac companying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a View in elevation illustrating a ate constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention with the sections in closed adjustment;
Fig. 2 is also a view in elevation of our improved gate with one of the sections in open position;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. A is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1l denote upstanding posts having their upper ends connected, as at 2, and between which the sections A and B of our improved gate are adapted to pass, said posts 1 being further connected by the cross pins 3 upon each of which rests a bar of a section A or B so that said section is capable of endwise movement.
Each of the sections A and B comprises a plurality of longitudinally disposed bars t arranged in parallelism and in predetermined spaced relation and the bars of each section are tied or connected by the cross beams 5.
At predetermined points intermediate its length the upper section A is provided with the cross beams 6 arranged at opposite sides thereof and extending therebelow as indicated at 7. The extended portion 7 has interposed therebetween the guide members or rollers 8 upon which rests one of the bars 4: of the lower section B, whereby said lower section is capable of endwise movement independently of the upper section A and it is to be noted that the contact of an end beam 5 with a depending portion 7 limits the opening movement of said lower section. It will also be observed that the opening movement of both of the sections A and B is limited by contact of the inner beams 6 and their extensions 7 with the posts 1 hereinbefore referred to.
9 denotes a latch post to which the sections A and B are adapted to be secured in order to maintain the same in closed position, said locking means being of any type preferred but, as herein disclosed, each of said locking means comprises a hook member 10 carried by a section A or B and coacting with the staple 11 secured to the latch post 9.
It will be perceived that when the lower section B is in open position independently of the upper section A, small stock such as hogs and sheep may readily pass while the gate is closed to large stock such as cattle and horses, while when the lower section B is closed and the upper section A is open the large stock may readily pass while the gate is closed to the small stock.
In order that the lower section B may be held in various open positions, we have found it of particular advantage to provide one of the bars 7, preferably the upper bar of said lower section with the longitudinally spaced openings 12 which are adapted to register with the openings 14 produced in the forward extensions 7 and through which registering openings the pin 15 is adapted to be disposed.
It is to be noted that the posts 1 are obliquely related so that when desired the sections A may be bodily swung in one direction into an open position and whereby the bodily movement of said sections A into a closed position is positively limited.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a gate constructed in accordance with our invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be as sembled, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
A gate structure comprising posts arranged in oblique relation, guide members connecting said posts, a plurality of imposed gate sections including longitudinally directed bars, a bar of each section resting upon a guide member whereby one of said sections may be moved longitudinally independently one of the other, one of said sections intermediate its length being provided with members overlying the opposite sides of the second section, a guide member carried by the overlying portions of said members and coacting with a bar of the second section, one of the bars of the second section being provided with a longitudinally disposed series of openings, the overlying members of the first section being provided with openings adapted to register with the openings of the bar, and a locking member disposed through the openings in the members and an opening in the bar of the second section when said openings are in register.
