MI. Mom-L III/MMPI/IL' 80.17. X rasaomzs Mona) NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE O. ORUM, OF BARRS STORE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,573, dated April 14, 1874; application filed July 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. ORUM, of Barrs Store, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Device for Opening and Closing Gates 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 an end elevation, the latter showing my present invention, and the former mypatented invention to which it is attached.
The invention relates to modes of opening gates by persons on foot or horseback, and is an improvement upon the subject-matter of my patent dated July 11,1873. It consists in the means hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents the bar, under and in line with which is placed the gate. B is a post on which the gate-bar is pivoted. O D are two posts, each located on an opposite side of gate, so that a plane passing through each of these three posts will be at right angles to the closed gate. On different sides of the pivot of gate-bar A, and at equal dis tances therefrom, are pivoted straps E F, which connect with and are pivoted to the bars G H. The latterare each pivoted to one of the posts O D, and are provided with a handle, I, pivoted so as to move vertically on the slotted guide J. These handles I I, when lying flat on the bars G H, are within reach of a person on foot, but a horseman stoops, then lifts, and finally operates them to open the gate.
Other devices have either compelled the horseman to continue in a stooping attitude while exerting his strength to open the gate, or where placed beyond the reach of the foot traveller.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with pivoted gate-bar A, posts 13 G D, and straps E. F, of the pivoted bars G H, provided with the guides J, and vertically movable handles I I, as and for the purpose described.
GEORGE O. ORUM.
