TE BTATE@ F Y i LAWN-SPRINKLER.
Application filed August 2, 1915.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SoHNAsA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Sprinklers, of which Il do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specil'ication.
Figure l is an end view of a lawn sprinkler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical cross section on line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation.
In the sprinkling of lawns, particularly such as are bordered or intersected by walks, it is desirable to provide a sprinkler that will throw a flat or fan-shaped spray of water in order to sprinkle the grass up to the edge of the walk without wetting the walk itself. It is also desirable that the sprinkler shall be equipped with means for throwing a rose or circular spray to cover as wide an area as possible when the sprinkler is operating upon portions of the lawn at a distance from the border or walk.
The present invention has for its object to provide a lawn sprinkler that shall be adapted for sprinkling both the body portion of the lawn and those portions of the lawn adjacent borders or side walks.
The invention consists in the novel construction of sprinkler hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
My improved lawn sprinkler comprises two sprinkler heads A and B that are mounted upon a common base or support C. The base or support C is preferably in the form of runners, the upper portions of which are cast integral with the sprinkler head In the preferred form of the invention, the sprinkler head A is a tubular casting open and threaded at one end to form a coupling t into which the coupling at the end of the rubber hose may be fitted. The opposite end of this sprinkler head A is closed and adjacent the closed end is formed a semicircular slot a through which the water admitted to the interior of the sprinkler head will pass in a flat or fan-shaped stream or spray. Above the sprinkler head A is mounted the sprinkler head B. This sprinkler head preferably consists of a circular casting having a short coupling b at one side Specification of Letters Patent.

for attachment thereto of the coupling at the end of the hose. The interior of the sprinkler head B is shown as formed with a central projection b and with a top central orifice b2 through which the water will pass in a rose-like spray. The chambered upper portion of the sprinkler head B is similar to the familiar cyclone sprinklers now in common use. The lower portion of the sprinkler head B is provided with depending lugs or feet 3, the oppositely iiaring ends of which are formed with holes through which pass the retaining bolts D. whereby the sprinkler head B is connected to the common support C, suitable nuts Z being provided for the ends of these bolts. As shown, the lugs orfeet o3 are cast integral with the body of the sprinkler head B.
In the use of my improved lawn sprinkler, when a portion of the lawn is to be sprinkled at a distance from a border or sidewalk, the hose will be connected to the coupling o of the sprinkler head B, but when the portion of the lawn adjacent the border or walk is to be sprinkled, the hose will be connected to the coupling a, of the sprinkler' head A and the water will be thrown in a fan-like spray or sheet parallel with and adjacent to the edge of the walk.
My improved lawn sprinkler provides a simple, cheap and eective means whereby a lawn may be sprinkled without danger of wetting the sidewalk adjacent the lawn. By forming the sprinkler heads separate and connecting them together, the parts can be readily formed of cast metal and thus the cost of manufacture can be reduced to the minimum.
It is obvious that the precise details of construction above set out may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention and features of the invention may be employed without its adoption as an entirety.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A lawn` sprinkler comprising a cornmon base or support and two sprinkler heads mounted one above the other upon said base or support, the lower one of said sprinkler heads having a tubular bore provided with a coupling at its open end and provided adjacent the top. of its closed end with a discharge orice for throwing a substantially fanshaped spray, the upper one of said sprinkler heads being provided in its top with a discharge orice for throwing a circular spray, said upper sprinkler head having at one end a coupling and having its opposite end outy of line with the oriice at theclosed end of the lower sprinkler head.
2. A lawn sprinkler comprising two sprinkler heads formed separately and secured together one above the other, one of said sprinkler heads being of tubular shape and having adjacent its closed end a transverse slot in itsY upper portion and the other of said sprinkler heads being mounted above said firstvnientioned sprinkler head and being provided with a central discharge orifice in its top7 the upper sprinkler head having itsvclosed 'endterminating outside the plane of said transverse slot insaid lower sprinkler head.
3. AV VlawnV `sprinkler comprising twoy sprinkler heads one arranged above the other and each formed of a separate casting, one of said sprinkler headshaving a tubular bore and having adjacent its closed end a transverse slot in its upper portion,
and the other of said sprinkler heads having a yoke-shaped lower part setting over said first mentioned sprinkler head, means for connecting said sprinkler heads together and a common base or support for holding said sprinkler heads in their proper relative positions.
4. A lawn sprinkler comprising two sprinkler heads, one of said sprinkler heads consisting of a tubular casting closed at one end and open at its opposite end and provided adjacent its closed end with a transverse slot in its upper portion, and the other of said sprinkler heads comprising a chambered casting formed at its top with a central orifice and having an induction port, said casting being provided with depending lugs, a common base or support for said sprinkler head and means for connecting said lugs to said base or support.
