To all "PC/10777 it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE E. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in sprinkling Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in Sprayers or sprinklers, the main object of the present invention. being.

is particularly adapted for use upon lawns, flower beds, and in gardens and green houses.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a sprayer or sprinkler which is double in form so that either a circular or a fan-like spray may be thrown from the same and is formed so that either spray member can be used independently of the other.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a sprinkler constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the spray plates.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the body portion of my improved sprinkler and formed integral with each end thereof, are the internally threaded enlarged portions 2 which are adapted for engagement with the connecting portion of a hose or pipe. The body member 1 is divided upon the interior thereof into two chambers generally indicated by the numerals 3 and 1, a division web 5 being disposed obliquely across the central bore of the body 1, whereby to provide an inclined wall at the inner end of each one of the chambers 3 and 4. The outer walls of the body 1 are provided with oppositely disposed openings 6 and 7, the opening 6 communicating with the chamber 4, while the opening 7 communicates with the chamber 3. surrounding the openings 6 and 7, are the outwardly flared or dish-like nozzles 8 which communicate with the chambers 3 and 1 through openings 6 and 7.

Extending transversely across the openings 6 and 7, are the bars 9 which are provided with threaded openings 10, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth. Arranged within the flared nozzles or portions 8, are the spray plates 11 and it will be apparent that both of these spray plates may be either alike or of different designssarid,..in" Fig. l, T have clearly illustrated the upper plate as formed with a plurality of holes in the body thereof and provided around its entire periphery with inwardly extending recesses 12. From this it will be apparent that the water passes through the chamber 3 and up through the openings 7, and thence out through the openings in the plate 11 and the recesses. lit will also be apparent that as the water passes out through the recesses 12, it will be in the form of a saucer and throw a large circular spray which will cover considerable area. These plates 11 which are arranged within the nozzles 8 are securely held in position by means of the screw bolts 13, the inner ends of which are threaded within the openings 10 formed in the bars 9. Thus, it will be apparent that the plates can be quickly and readily removed for cleansing at various intervals. It will also be apparent that the plates can be readily changed so that different forms of sprays may be thrown from the sprinkler itself. The spray illustrated in Fig. 3 is provided upon one side of the center with a plurality of openings and the periphery is provided around one-half its circumference with the recesses 14 and it will be noted from this that when this spray plate isused, it forms a fan-like spray as the water is discharged therethrough.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,- it will be apparent that when the threaded enlarged portions 2 are engagedwith a hose or pipe, either one of the sprays upon opposite sides ofthe body may be used, as they are provided with separate water connections.

In order to support the sprinkling device in an upright position, I provide a bail member 15, the ends of which'are bent upon themselves and arranged in spaced relation with the body portion, the'extreme ends of the bail member'being removably disposed on the earth or on any other surface.

'As illustrated in Fig. 1, this bail is in an upright'position, whereby to retain the sprinkler member 1 against lateral rotary movement and it will be understood that the hose or pipe sections (not shown), which are connected to the enlarged portions 2, will retain the device against longitudinal rotary movement. In Fig. 1 the bail is illustrated in perpendicular position but it will be understood that the same may be used to support the device against lateral movement by placing it at one side of the body, as illustrated in Fig. .3. It will be noted that when in a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, it will support the 1 opposite spray member in spaced relation with the surface of the ground, so as to prevent the same from becomingclogged with dirt and other particles should the same rept swung entirely around the body so that either one of the spray members can be arranged at the-top. It will be noted that by having the recesses 12 and 14 formed in the A edges of the plates 11, the water in passing therethrough will strike the inner inclined face of the flared nozzles and tend to give an lmpetus and will spray, over a larger area than it would, if the water did not strike this inclined face;

While I have shown. and described the pre-- ferred form of myinvention, it will be obvlous that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted'to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims. I

Having thus described this invention, what I desire toclaim as new and secure by LettersPatent, is:

1. A sprinkler including an elongated body, said body being provided upon opposite sides thereof with. openings, flared nozzles formed upon the body around said openings, a dividing wall extending diagonally through the body to provide chambers, each of which communicates with one of the openings upon opposite sides of the body, and spray plates arranged within the nozzles over each one of the openings, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A sprinkler including an elongated body, said body being provided with openings upon opposite sides thereof, a diagonal wall extending through the body forming a chamber in each end of the body, flared nozzles arranged upon opposite sides of the body and disposed around said openings, bars extending transversely across the openings,- spray plates arranged ,within the saucer-like projections, and removable bolts extending through the spray plates and threaded into the bars, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A sprinkler including an elongated body, internally threaded enlarged portions formed at each end of the body, said body being provided with openings upon opposite sides thereof, flared nozzles having communication with the openings, a diagonal wall eX- tending through the body forming chambers communicating with the openings, a transverse bar arranged across each of the openings, spray plates removably arranged Within the saucer-like projections and having bolts extending therethrough and extending into the bars, as and for the purpose set forth.
