Description

PATENT OFF] WESLEY HARTMAN, OF JACKSONVILLE, OREGON.
LAWN SPRINKLER.
Application filed February 10, 1927. Serial No.1 67,225.
The present invention relates to improvements in lawn sprinkling apparatus and has for its primary object to provide a sprinkler adapted to sprinkle a greater or less area through regulation of the pressure of the water delivered thereto.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lawn sprinkling device constructed so that a rectangular area of a lawn will be watered during the operation thereof.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of .a sprinkler of the above type which is comparatively simple and durable of construction and which can be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progresses.
in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like reference numerals are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the same Figure 1 is aside elevational view of my improved sprinkler partially in section to indicate the interior construction, and
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 generally designates the sprinkler casing embodying a rectangular box-like structure formed with a relatively large circular openin g in the top thereof. The wall of this opening is formed with a depending flange 6 which is U-shaped in cross section and adapted to provide an annular groove disposed below the top of the casing. Formed integral. with the top of the casing and projectine upwardly therefrom at-the corners thereof are tapered fingers 7 the purpose of which will later appear. I
Supported by the flange 6 of the casing and arranged to close the opening in the top thereof is the concavo-convex bottom member 8 of the sprinkler head. which head, as a whole, is of hollow lenticular form, this member being provided with .a peripheral vertically depending flange 9. The lower edge of the flange 9 is rolled to form a bead adapted to be snugly fitted in the bottom of the annular groove formed by the flange 6. The center of the plate 8 is formed with an opening about which is provided an annular nipple 10 interiorly screw threaded for connection with the upper end of a pipe 11. The pipe 11 includes a branch extending horizontally Within the casing and through an opening in the side of the casing and terminating in an exterior screw threaded extension 12 designed for the connection of a hose.
Mounted so as to contact with the peripheral edges of the member 8 is a complementary concavo-convex member 13 provided with. a vertical peripheral fiange'let contacting with the outer side of the flange 9 and terminating at its lower edge within the bead of the flange 9. The plates 8 and 13 are rigidly connected to each other, at their margins and to the flange by a filling 15 of solder or in any other suitable manner. As clearly illustrated in the drawing, the member 13 is provided with a plurality of arcuately ar ranged series of perforations 16, Theseperforations are so formed that each series is located opposite a respective edge of the top of the casing so .as tospray water overan area in the fori'n of a square. Due to the convex formation of the member 13, the perforations are outwardly inclined, the corner perforations 17 being spaced more remote from the center of the member, so that corner jets of water issue therefrom and fall to the lawn surface at points to define the corners of the rectangulararea to be sprinkled, the jets of water issuing from the outermost row of each series of apertures falling to the lawn surface along substantially straight lines to define the boundary lines of-said area, and the jets of water issuing from the inner rows of the several series of apertures being so directed as to sprinkle the remainder of the area.
In operation, a hose is connected to the extension 12 of the pipe 11 and water under suitable pressure admitted to the sprinkler head. Due to the particular formation of the apertures in the sprinkler plate 13 the water will be discharged so as to cover a rectangular preferably square area, the size of the sprinkled area varying according to the water pressure. Thus by controlling the pressure of the water the amount of lawn surface watered by the sprinkler can be regulated. It will be also noted, that the standards formed on the marginal top plate of the casing 5 will form guard members for the sprinkler head.
An. essential characteristic of the present sprinkler construction is the extreme efficiency and economy'with which a lawn area.
may be watered, the sprinkler being moved from place to place to cover the entire lawn surface and by suitable arrangement of the sprinkler the watering process can be accomplished very economically and uniformly.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same and that various changes as to the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted tO without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A lawn sprinkler comprising a hollow casing having an opening in its top and provided with a seat surrounding said opening, a sprinkler head of hollow lenticular form having a peripheral portion secured in said seat, the said head having a plurality of series of perforations in its upper wall arranged to direct jets of water, issuing therefrom over a substantially rectangular area, and a water supply pipe extending into the casing through one side thereof and opening into the sprinkler head through the bottom wall thereof. 7
2. A lawn sprinkler comprising a hollow casing having an opening in its top and provided with a seat surrounding said opening, a sprinkler head of hollow lenticular form comprising assembled concavo-convex upper and lower sections, the sections being provided at their peripheries with interlocking depending flanges, the said flanges being secured within the said seat in the casing top the said head having a plurality of series of perforations in its upper wall arranged to direct jets of water issuing therefrom over a substantially rectangular area, and a water supply pipe extending into the casing through one side thereof and opening into the said sprinkler head through the bottom wall thereof.
3. A lawn sprinkler comprising a hollow casing having an opening in its top and provided with a depending seating flange of U- shaped cross section surrounding said opening, sprinkler head of hollow lenticular form having a depending peripheral portien seated and secured within the said flange, the said head having a plurality of series of perforations in its upper wall arranged to direct of water, issuing therefrom, over a substantially rectangular area, and a water supply pipe extending into the casing through one side thereof and opening into the sprinkler head through the bottom wall thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
