RAIL-FASTENING DEVICE OR CLAMP.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FEKECS PAL, a subject of Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria and Apostolic King of Hungary, residing at East St. Louis, county of St. Clair, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Rail-Fastening Device or Clamp, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful rail-fastening device or clamp, the principal object of my present invention being to provide a simple, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive device which may be readily ,manufactured and which may be easily'and conveniently operatively engaged both with a railroad-tie and ra l for rigidly fastening or clamping the rall to and upon the tie.
With the above, and other objects in View, my present invention resides in certaln novel features'of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, which shows my invention in preferred form, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a railroad-tie, showing in end elevation rails operatively fastened or clamped thereupon by a set or pair of my new clamping or fastening devices; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a plurality of railroad-ties and of rail-clamping or fastening members embodying my invention in operative engagement therewith, one rail, with its companion rail omitted, being shown, partly broken away and in section, operatively fastened to the ties by my clamping devices and one of the tles being also shown partly broken away and in section; Fig. 3 is an end view of a railroad-tie, showing a rail in side elevation operatively fastened or clamped thereupon by a clamping or fastening device embodying my invention; and Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one of the cooperating members forming part of my new rail-fastening device or clamp.

My new rail-clamp or fastening device 0 includes two main cooperating members, which are identical in form and construction, being interchangeable duplicates. Each of these members, whichmay be cast or otherwise manufactured, and in the manufacture of which members the same pattern or mold may be employed for both, comprises preferably an integral rectangular cross-piece 1 and parallel end-pieces 22 disposed or depending obliquely downwardly from cross-piece 1 approximately at right angles thereto. Cross-piece 1 is fiat on its under and inner side faces, as-at 3 and 1, respectively, and has a thickness, es-
pecially at its inner side faced, preferably equal approximately to the thicknessof the base-flange Z) of the rail B. Projecting laterally from the top or upper face of cross-piece 1 and disposed in the same general direction, or on the same side of crosspiece 1, with end-pieces 2-2, are lugs 55 face with, face of, the base-flange End-pieces 2-2 are each cut away flush with the under face 3 of crosspiece 1 to provide faces 66 adapted to engage the rail B at the under face of its base-flange Z2. End-pieces 2-2 are also obliquely cut away, as at 7-7, to provide shouldered extensions 8-8 transversely perforated, as at 9, to receive a-tie-engaging bolt 10 for securing or fastening the clamping-members to the tie A. Preferably extensions 881 have a thickness equal approximately to half the thickness of end pieces 22, and upper faces 8-8 of extensions 88, while obliquely oppositely disposed to, have the same angle to the horizontal as, shoulders 7-7 of end-pieces 2-2, extensions 88 of one member of the clamp being adapted, when the clamping members are in operative position engaging the tie and rail, to fiatwise smoothly engage and interlock at their faces 88 with the shoulders 7-7 of the other member of the clamp.
In use or operation, the cooperating clamping members of my new rail-fastening device are adapted to straddle the tie A on opposite sides of the rail B with their crosspieces 1 fitting smoothly at their under face a 3 flatwise upon, and. crosswise of, the. upper face of the tie, and at their inner face f fiatwiseagains't'the outer edge of, with lugs 5 projecting laterally upon and thereby engaging with, the base-flange?) of the rail,
their end-pieces 22 not only snugly or V closely at their inner faces hugging the'tie at its opposite side faces, but also at their i faces .6 being equal approximately to the width of the base-flange b of the rail. The
upper faces'6 flatwise engaging the rail on the under face of the base-flange b thereof. It will be seen, reference being had particularly to. Fig. 1, that the end-pieces 22 of the clampingmembers abutor contact when operatively engaging the rail, the combined width-of said end-pieces 22 at their flat cooperatingmember of the clamp being in such OPBIiLtIVB posit1on as described w1th -the rail therebetween, their new oppositelydisposedextensions 88 interlock with their faces 88 and said shoulders 7-7 in flatwise'cooperative engagement and with their perforations 9 in register. The tie being suitably-perforated, a securing-bolt 10 may be now readily passed a transversely through the tie and said extensions, the
clamping-members and rail being thereby firmly and rigidly fastened to the tie. The
clamping-members with the rail engaged thereby being so fastened to the t e, it will at onc'e be seen that the interlocking engagement of'the extensions 8-8 of the clamping-members prevent any pivotal, tilting, or spreading movement thereof on bolt 10 which might tend to release the rail.

' 1 amaware that minor changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new railfastening device may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing-from the nature and prinfrom the cross-piece, and extensions on said end-pieces obliquely disposed to the crosspiece,'each of said members being adapted to straddle the tie and to operatively engage the rail at the upper, side, and under faces of the base flange thereof, and a bolt adapted to engage with the tie and with said extensions for simultaneously fastening said members, and thereby the rail, to the tie.
2. A rail-fastening device comprising a pair of cooperating members each including a cross-piece having laterally projecting lugs on its upper face, end-pieces depending from the cross-piece, and extensions on said end-pieces obliquely disposed to the crosspiece, each of said members being adapted to straddle the tie and to operatively engage the rail at the upper, side, and under faces of the base-flange thereof, and a bolt adapted to engage with the tie and with said extensions for fastening said members, and thereby the rail, to the tie, said extensions being adapted to interlock to prevent pivotal movement of said members relatively to the rail when in engagement therewith.
3. A rail-fastening device comprising a pair of cooperating members each including a cross-piece having laterally projecting lugs on its upper face, end-pieces depending from the. cross-piece, and shouldered extensions on said end-pieces obliquely disposed to the cross-piece, each of said members being adapted to straddle the tie and to operatively engage the rail at the upper, side, and under faces of the base-flange thereof, and a bolt adapted to engage-with the tie and with said extensions for fastening said members, and thereby the rail, to the tie, the extensions of said members being adapted to overlap and interlock to prevent pivotal movement on said bolt of said members when in engagement with the rail.

A rail-fastening device comprising a pair of cooperating members each including a cross-piece and obliquely shouldered depending end-pieces, each of said members being adapted to straddle the tie and to operatively engage the rail at the upper, side, and under faces of the base-flange thereof, extensions on the end-pieces of said members, each of said extensions having a face obliquely oppositely disposed to, but having the same angle to the horizontal as, the shoulders of said end-pieces, and a bolt adapted to engage with the tie and with said extensions for fastening said members, and thereby the rail, to the tie, said extensions being adapted to interlockingly engage at their said faces with the shoulders of said end-pieces to prevent pivotal movement on said belt of said members when in engage ment with the rail.

A rail-fastening device comprising a pair of cooperating members each including a cross-piece, laterally projecting lugs on the upper face of said cross-piece, and obliquely shouldered end-pieces depending from said cross-piece, each of said members being adapted to straddle the tie and t0 operatively engage at its said cross-piece, lugs, and end-pieces With the rail at the side, upper, and end faces, respectively, of the base-flange thereof, extensions on theendpieces of said members, each of said extensions having a face obliquely oppositely disposed to, but having the same angle to the horizontal as, the shoulders of said endpieces, and a bolt adapted to engage With the tie and With said extensions for fastening said members and thereby the rail to the tie, said extensions being adapted to interlockingly engage at their said faces with the shoulders of said end-pieces to prevent pivotal movement on said bolt of said end members When in engagement With the rail.
6. A rail-fastening device including a member adapted to straddle the tie and to operatively engage the rail at the upper, side, and under face of the base-flange thereof, said member comprising a cross-piece, laterally projecting lugs on the upper face of said cross-piece, end-pieces depending from said cross-piece, and extensions on said end-pieces obliquely disposed to said crosspiece, said extensions being adapted to receive means for fastening the member to the tie.
7. A rail-fastening device including a member adapted to straddle the tie and to operatively engage the rail at the upper, side, and under faces of the base-flange thereof, said member comprising a crosspiece, laterally projecting lugs on the upper face of said cross-piece, end-pieces depending from said cross-piece, and extensions on said end-pieces obliquely disposed to said cross-piece, said extensions being perforated to receive a bolt for fastening the member to the tie.
