Another object is' to provide a composite f tie made up of a metal connecting stra and supporting end blocks, said blocks eing molded. I A still further object is to provide means permanently connected with the blocks for engaging and holding vthe fastening devices in osition. i
other object is to provide a tie, the
parts of which are so disposed that-the rails' Will rest upon both the connecting strap and the molded su porting blocks, the same thus presentinol a irin support for the rails.
` With t ese yand other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations' of parts which vifill be hereinafter .more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In' the' accompanying drawingsis shown the preferred forni ofthe invention.
nsaid drawings: Figure 1 is a pla-n view of a tie embodying the present improve ments, the middle portion. of the strep being removed. Fig. 2 1s a section on line w--e;,
Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted pers'ective view of one of the rail' engegin' r evices. Flg. 4 1s a detail view or a. Inodiied means for securing the 'parts together.
Referring to the figures by cliaracters of lreference, 1 designates a supporting block which may be formed of cement; compressed paper, or any other preferred material and the bottoni of the block is preferabiy l1ollowed or recessed as indicated at 2 so that when the block is in position on a roadbed there Will 'be no danger of its creeping.. Formed longitudinally Within the upper face of the block is a rectangular recess 3 end embedded Within the block is a L!-sliaped bolt 4 the terminals of which are screw threaded as indicated at v5 and extend upward from the recess 3 and above the upper surface of the block. Two of these bloclrs 4the blocks 1 and v'each end at 9 so' as to form 'abutments i pressed ortions of the straps have openings.
a're used in donnectien with each tiejand-Lf both blocks are designed to be corfdected by meansof `a metal strap 6 which inpreig erably galvanized or otherwise protected from the action of theelements. The ,end portions of this strap aredesigned'to. rest on rtion is depressed longitudinally as indieated'at 7 lso as to fit snugly Within one of the grooves vor recesses 3, each bend in the strap forming a square shoulder 8 while theends of the strap are bent upward'at yright angles as indicated i They de- 1() for t e reception of the end portions 'of the bolts 4 and when the straps are in osi'- tion upon the blocks the upper faces o the depressed portions 7 are 4disposed-viush with? 'the upper faces of theblocks 1. vIn con-- nection with eachbolt fltwo festeningde-` Vices areV employed, each consisting of a I plate 11 reduced longitudinally along one' edge to form a shoulder 12 and atonguel.
Shoulder 12 is designed to abut against the base flange of arail 14 while the tongue 13 is designed to lap the4 base flange. vThese plates are designed to be oppositely disposed upon the depressed portions 7` of theV strap and abut against the shoulder 8 and the extension 9 respectively. lO'peningsl'iare formed Within the platesvfor the reception of the bolt ends and oy-screwing' nuts upon the bolt ends the 'platesll are firmly clamped u on the straps and rails.
`Wnere ish plates'are arranged above the tie es indicated at 16 the ton ues 13 of the pletes 1 'l do not extend the fu l Width of the pistes but terminate short of one edge thereof end a retaining block or enlargement 17 is f located at the end of the tongue and is so 'proportined as to itsnugly Withi one of the notches 1S of a fish plate. 1t Wil thus be: apparent that when the plates 11 areysecured' in place and in'engagement'with the fish..

cushioned and noise reduced to-,thc minimum a layer 19 of resilient materialsuch as asbesln order that the rails be properly" tos 1s preferably interposed between the base 'v of cach rail and the depressed portion 7 .ofv
the strap.`
Importance is attached to the fact that the groove 3 does not extend throughout the length of block 1 because thel depressed .p0r-
tion of the strap thus positively engages the j toin portion of the block with the bolts in enga ement therewith and extending upward y through the block.
What is clalmed is: 1. A railroad tie comprising supporting blocks, a connecting strap having depressed portions seated Within one face of each lock, each of the depressed portions terminating in u standing means for preventing lateral disp acement of rails upon the depressed portion, and means for securing a rail upon each depressed portion of the strap Iand between said upstanding means.
2, In a railroad tie the combination with supporting blocks having recesses in the upper faces thereof, said recesses terniinating shortfof the ends of the blocks; of a connecting stra having depressed portions seated within t e recesses, said portions havin f retaining shoulders at the ends thereof, rai engaging-devices interposed between and disposed to bear against the shoulders, and
mea-ns within each block for securing said devi'ces and the strap to the block.
' 3. In a railroad tle the combination with Isupporting, blocks having recesses in the up- 'per faces thereof and terminating short of the ends of the blocks; of a connecting strap having depressed portions seated Within the recesses and rovided at .their ends with shoulders constitutin abutments, bolts ernhedded Within the locks and extending through the depressed portions of thestrap, and rail en a 'ng devices upon the depgessed portions otghe strap and engaged y the straps, said devices abutting against the shoulders.
4. In a railroad tiethe combination `with supportingblocks and 4a connecting strap secured thereon; of rail engaging devices each constitutin a plate, a rai flange enga ing tongue for engagement with the notch of a ,fish plate.
5. In a railroad tie the combination with supporting blocks having recesses in their upper faces; of a connecting strap having depressed portions seated within the recesses, a U-bolt e bedded within each block and extending t irough the depressed portion of the strap upon the block, oppositely disposed rail engaging devices upon each depressed portion and engaged by the bolt, and a cush- 1oning materia upon each depressed portion and between the devices thereon.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto aHiXed our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
