IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,998, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. WISMER, of Doylestown, in the county of Bucks and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvemei'its in Washing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making apart of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washing-machine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the central portion thereof.
A represents a box, of suitable dimensions, having a double-inclined bottom, 8, upon which are placed, longitudinally in the box, bars 0 (J. These bars are placed parallel with each other at suitable distances apart, extending from end to end, and are concave on their upper edges, these concave edges being also rounded and extending from the upper edge of one end to the corresponding edge of the other end, as shown in Fig. l. D represents a roller, corrugated and fluted longitudinally and placed across the concave bars 0 O. This roller has its journal-bearings in the lower ends of the two levers E E, which are connected at their upper ends by a handle, G, and by a bar, H, immediately above the roller. The ends of this bar H pass through the levers E E and form journals on the outside thereof which have their hearings in blocks I I. These blocks move in vertical dovetailed grooves in the side of the box A, so that the roller may accommodate itself to the amount of clothing being washed. The box A is provided with two hinged lids, J J, having suitable slots, through which the levers E E pass and may be worked back and forth. The roller, being grooved or flutedlongitudinally and running crosswise while the concave slots or bars run lengthwise, leaves a space for the water to pass through.
The machine washes perfectly and does not tear the clothes or break the buttons.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described washinganachine, con sistin g of the box A with double-inclined bottom B, concave slots or bars 0 G, roller D, levers E E, handle Gr, bar II, blocks I I, and lids J J, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
